Number 1 is right. They basically support the full weight of the car and the suspension loads. Eventually they just wear out. You can get stock or aftermarket ones. They have OE offset ones too that offer more camber if you want it, or there are plates that attach to the top of the OE mount to give more camber at the expense of raising the ride height slightly. You have lots of options there.
FWIW, You can get stock, solid rubber, 70-80-95 poly, aluminum, some delrin/nylon, etc. You can get whatever you want to make the car handle and ride as needed.
