So I went to do a compression test, just to be sure everything is okay. Look at my spark plugs. I know something isn't right but I can't remember what it means. Either I am not using a high enough octane, though I'm using 91, or my plugs are too hot or cold.

It's a Nikon D50 DSLR.  Using a Nikor 24-120mm, 72mm lense.

The lense makes all the difference. The camera is awsome, but the lense is what really got those shots.

i have a similar problem, but only on the 4th cylinder (closer to the cabin). i have to clean (sandbrush?) the plug every couple thousand miles and it runs fine after that. i heard that these things can build up on the spark plug because the oil burns inside the cylinder. never did give it too much attention dough...

The top electrode looks a little closer than the bottom one and is getting hotter. It is eroded more also. Oil getting into cylinder. Regap and swap coils to see if problem moves to another cylinder.

As does the web. One of many: http://www.beru.com/english/produkte/zuendkerzen/diagnosehilfe.php

Yours don't look bad, but well aged. How many miles on them?

They don't look that bad, maybe running a little lean.

the spark only comes of one side of the plug, the closer side. Path of least resistance.

There are about 1,700 miles on those plugs.
