engine bearings
« on: April 19, 2014, 11:55:14 AM »
I'm getting ready to start buying parr for my engine rebuild. I'll start with crank and con-rod bearings. Would I be good with standard bearings or should I spring for those special coated ones, like from VAC motorsport?

Hi
What you really want is 360 degree bearings. Not sure whether vac bearings are 360.
Standard bearings are 220 oil flow for the m42.
Cheers

The standard bearings are just fine. All new bearing sets include a 360deg thrust bearing (unlike the original 180deg).

The coated bearings can be helpful in a situation where you have low oil flow to prevent further damage. Outside of that its not really shown to have much gain. I ended up putting coated bearings in my engine because they werent much more expensive.

You don't need a 360deg oiling ring. Very few modern engines do. If the 220deg ring is good enough for the high revs of the S54, its just fine here IMO.
