Lower timing case swap
« on: August 17, 2014, 01:23:31 PM »
I have a early m42 going into my 2002, the engine is apart and the idler gear seems to have a bit of sloppiness, so I was looking into the later m42/m44 lowering timing case with the deflector instead of idler gear. Can anybody tell me exactly all I need to do that and does somebidy happen to have what I need? Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the 'club. Sounds like a cool project! Post some pics when you get a chance.

I haven't done this, but from what I've gathered you need some parts from the E36 M42 built after mid '93 IIRC. The inner and outer cases along with the updated timing chain rails & chain tensioner. The >96 M44 has the right cases, but it won't have a mount for the crank angle sensor.

There may be a difference in the oil pumps, I'll leave that to someone who's done it.

I will as soon as something noteworthy happens. Tapatalk still isn't working? Anyways I would really like to have a list of part numbers for everything I need to do that. When I search e36 m42 timing case they come up but do not specify if it's the early e36 m42 or the later. It's there a different part number for each timing case? Early m42,early e36 m42, late e36 m42 and m44?  The only thing I've seen is I could use m42 oil pump if I go with the later m42 but m44 would need m44 oil pump? If anybody has better more accurate info please chime in. I'm just going off what I can find. Thanks

From the above mentioned thread:

Lower Timing Chain Case 11141739699
Gasket, case to block       11141743032   metal gasket much improved
Deflection Rail                 11311739130   replaces old style deflection wheel some of you have had trouble with
Filister Head ScrewsX1     07119919824   You just need one of these as you can use the one from the deflection wheel.  BMW no longer carries
                                                             them but it's a M6X35
Bottom deflection rail       11311734694   Old syle doesn't fit the new case.  Also need new, shorter bolts M6X25
Filister head screws X2     07119919926   M6X25 for bottom deflection rail
Washers X2                     07119931044
Gasket set, TC cover        11141247633   Much improved metal gaskets. 2 gaskets included replace the 5 paper gaskets.

Pretty straight forward swap.

If you haven't seen MikeDE's thread on his M42 rebuild he covers the updated timing swap: http://www.m42club.com/forum/index.php?topic=13595.msg104100#msg104100

I remember watching MikeDE's overhaul thread, totally forgot about it. Excellent info - thanks for posting it!

I appreciate all the help. I got the later m42 case with the gaskets, bolts, rails.. Etc.. I had one concern which maybe nothing. It seems the oil port coming out of the block do not line up with the new case like the old case? Also the oil vein is different. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. it's not letting me post pictures on my phone.
