Did someone steal my lifter tick ?

my lifter tick has dissapeared.

Wow I thought I was the only one .... When I fist got my 318i it had a lot of lifter noise.
   I switched the oil to 5w 30 oil and the tick was gone. I have since changed the oil to a synthetic 10w 40, and still no problems. The lifter tick was gone as soon as the oil was changed. I wrote it off to dirty oil and never thought about it again. Till 3 days ago. The lifter tick was back, I thought this was gone forever ! I parked the car for the night and thought I had lost my tensioner or chain or ??? I started the car up the next day and no ticking, The same thing this today. No tick. Did someone steal my lifter tick ? If you did, you can keep it. LOL :D

 It was cold that day, By Vancouver standards... So it was maybe + 3 C.

My car when I got it was worse, like yours.
The previous owner did not change the oil enough and probably used cheap oil. You probably put  better stuff in and it has slowly removed any buildup. As the oil ages, it will begin again. Before changing my pump and chain, my tick would return at 7500 miles, every time when using Syntech 10w30. A few days later (8000 miles), my oil change light would come on.

ummm the oil change light has nothing to do with the condition of the oil

but it does mean your supposed to change your oil, a corrilation between recomended changes, oil loosing its properties/getting dirty, and the lifter tick i think is what he was getting at.

I can definitely see lifter tick happening based on oil type and change intervals.

Ever tear apart a motor that's had synthetic used all the time and one with conventional oil? I just did a partial inspection on 2 M42 motors with this exact scenario and you can definitely tell which is which.

Exactly, I just found it interesting that about the same time I should be changing it, is when the car needed it.

Hydraulic lifters are especially prone to problems with viscosity. Jim at Metric Mechanic had to figure out exactly what oil to use in order for Febi's car to rev like it does. Too thick and the high rpm's would pump up the lifter too much allowing the valve to hit the piston, though his pistons are clearance they could still hang open. Too little and they will not open fully.

It is a balancing act.

I found it interesting though that Jim recommended heavier oil. I have been meaning to try heavier and see if it helps. Last time I tried, my motor was not as clean and I got bad lifter tick.
