Spring help
« on: March 16, 2011, 03:52:43 PM »
I just bought a 91 318i.  I have read all the FAQs here, at BFC and at R3V and I am still a bit perplexed.

The car came lowered.  The springs are purple-ish but are a bit to low and mid turn bumps causes the tire to contact the fender.  How can I raise the car a bit without dumping a ton of money into a new suspension?

I read about coil spring shims but have found no source for various thicknesses.  stock ride height is too high of course.  I like low, but functional low and not just showy low.

Is there an easy way to fix this problem?

Thank you.

It's not easy, as the studs on the upper bearing aren't that long.  I'd  get a cheap HF spring compressor and look for someone replacing their  stock springs.  Avoid six-cyl, they'd make it worse.

A buddy of mine and I just split a parts car with the same purple springs.  Worse in our case...it's an M20 super eta...the heavier engine with those short springs put the oil pan about four inches off the ground.  No way I'd drive that thing myself, it's a miracle the engine lasted long enough to have a head gasket leak.

Thanks

I may just splurge and get the adjustable springs from GC.

I cannot afford full coil overs right now and I had a full set of coilovers on my old STi and once I settled on a ride height I never changed it again.  I just want the car up a little and that seems like the least expensive option.
