M42 Lower exhaust manifold flange- studs or what?
« on: May 30, 2010, 05:00:23 PM »
Anybody know if the M42 lower exhaust manifold studs are threaded into the manifold flange or a headed press fit bolt? I see different pictures on parts suppliers and oem type diagrams.
Nice to know before I light up the torch and get the BFH out..
Thanks
Jim

I'm pretty sure they are of the press-fit type.  They are easily replaced with high-quality metric bolts.

Last ones I saw were on a 95 318ti with an M42.  The oem studs were strange.  They were not press fit but rather had a round head with a side cut off at an angle.  They looked like they were intended to be welded on.  I just used some nuts and bolts instead.

On my 1991 318is, those "bolts" were tack welded onto the flange.  I used a dremel with the gyros cut-off wheels (i think 1.5").  The gyros wheels work so much better than the standard stuff.  I then replaced them with grade 8 bolts with lock washers.
