Cranks but won't start
« on: January 09, 2010, 06:34:21 PM »
Hello everyone!
I am a new and proud owner of E30 318.
I had this car for over a year now. The car was running fine, until alternator died.
The car was sitting in my garage for over 6 months, couple of days ago I installed new (reman) alternator.
Not it cranks but wont start, and I can't hear the fuel pump running, so I bought new fuel pump off ebay, and still the same problem.
Any ideas what could be wrong? Is there any relay or fuse for the fuel pump?

Hello e30arm - Wish I could be more specific and help you besides telling you to search on here. Look in the Engine and Drive line section you will fined all your answers. There is a lot of threads that has been written about this. Do you have a Service Manual?  GL

First do the stomp test to see if you have stored codes.  If you get a 1444, I'd figure it's the crank position sensor, fuel pump relay, or associated wiring.

Pull & test the fuel pump relay (it's mounted on a small 3-relay block under the firewall plastic).  It'll click if you put 12v on pins 85 & 86.  While it's out, short pins 30 & 87 on the socket with a bit of wire & see if that wakes up your pump.

Check the resistance of the crank position sensor.  Should be 'round 600 ohms.  The ECU/DME won't turn on the pump until the crank position sensor sends a signal.

thanks for your responses.
I just did stomp test and came up with 1 1 2 1 code.
I am checking the relay now

Glad you got her back on the road.  FYI the pump will stay on if you do this test.
