Engine + Driveline / little screws for the butterflies in the TB
« on: November 15, 2013, 07:32:27 PM »
Disassembled the TB completely to do a refresh. Looking at the little screws on the butterflies (that hold them to the shafts), they almost look to be mildly mushroomed at the base of the thread (essentially, a lock-screw). When removing, looks as if the last thread on the screw pretty much just shaved itself out (these things are TIGHT).

I don't see those screws shown anywhere on RealOEM or elsewhere as a standalone part. Any advice on putting them back in/replacing them? At this point it looks like I'll just chamfer the edge a bit and use some red loctite, but would obviously like to "do it like the factory" if possible.

WTB/WTT / Re: Pa 318i drivetrain,m42 to drive shaft

In case you're interested, I have a complete M10B20 drivetrain (except diff) from my 77 320i. Engine spins freely, but I've never started (bought the car for the body, already have an engine to swap in). Engine + tranny + DS + whatever else comes with it. Located in Washington DC area.

And it's cheap. Make an offer (reasonable or not) if you want it.

WTB/WTT / WTB: various M42 stuff, new and used.

Here's the list of what I need. Maybe you have spares sitting around or didn't finish a built or something. Anyhow, if you have any of it, let me know!

Can pay immediately if we agree on a price.

Most of it I'd like new, but some things I'd take used (noted):

11-31-1-743-187-M40 Chain tensioner (new)

11-31-1-247-483-M9 Timing chain rail (will take new or used, as long as it's the updated style and not the old metal one)

11-24-1-713-342-M9 53mm con-rod bolts. New only, needless to say.

11-14-1-439-570-M104 Crankshaft seal.

11-53-1-714-738-M9 Water pipe (the plastic piece). New only. OEM BMW only.

11-14-1-247-393-BOE Updated oil pressure relief valve

Also if you have M42 oil filters/related O-rings for the aluminum cap style, I'm interested as well. New, please

General Topics / M42 transmissions all the same?

I found my vin online keflaman, its WBABE62010JC00728 :)

Tell me how do you know irish, this would be interesting :D

just want to make sure I get the right trannie in case my one is really f'd.

:D

2 M42s in my garage + 2 trannies. Both out of e30s - one a '91 and one a '92.

I wanted to use the "newer" tranny with the "older" engine, and accidentally found out why it wouldn't fit on with the original shaft bearing, lol....

once I switched the bearings, good to go.

IDK why they changed it between years, but I figure the thicker one is stronger, so there may have been some kind of problem with the input shaft breaking....IDK, who knows....

Engine + Driveline / Missing bolt, oil leak
« on: January 20, 2013, 08:49:29 PM »
having just redone an M42 entire timing case/oil pans/etc, I can tell you that I don't recall running into any M9 bolts (nor have I EVER seen an M9 bolt used on any car.) BMW is extremely consistent with the bolt sizes. Damn near everything on the front of the engine is M8.

All of the bolts associated with the alternator adjuster/brackets are M8 (I also checked on RealOEM to confirm), as are all of the bolts associated with the PS adjuster/bracket and the AC bracket.

Or do you mean the timing chain tensioner? Be more specific about the part (or take a pic of location) and I'm sure we can find all the specs on realOEM, if you haven't looked already.

or I can check my spare M42 sitting in my garage.

Also, are you sure that the bolt and/or bolt hole aren't stripped or cross-threaded? Could explain why it won't start.

some m42 trannies have larger input shaft diameters, so you have to use the correct input shaft bearing.

ask me how I know :)

Electrical / Picture request: E30 O2 sensor routing

I don't have a pic, but I ran mine behind the heat shield. It hooks up under the battery tray to the engine wiring harness. My car was formerly M10.

probably one of your belts. When it gets cold they can slip. Check all your belts for tightness and wear.

Engine + Driveline / How many anciliaries are too many?
« on: December 30, 2012, 05:44:55 PM »
everything. I just swapped in a full engine with all accessories, tranny, mounts, etc by myself.

would have been much easier with a second person helping to maneuver the engine, but still wasn't too difficult solo...getting all the engine/tranny mounts into the holes is the hardest part I'd say.

General Topics / identify this wire!

The tach plug is a lot smaller, rectangular in section and has three wires.  I think it was called the C103 connector.  It should be in all e30s before the wiring update in mid-'87(?).   You should also have an idle control harness with a large green plug that was eliminated in later 1.3 versions of the Motronic system.  Like others have mentioned, it must be spliced into the large motronic plug in order to make the tach functional.

I had two plugs very similar to that one on a '90 325i harness - one was white and the other was black.  They didn't connect to anything.  I've never know what they were for, figured it was for the stereo or some sort of OEM dealer-installable security system.

interesting, I'll have to find that.

I am using a full M42 engine harness, so the idle control wiring came out with the M10 harness.

I'll have to see if I can find the C103 - I guess that has to be spliced into the wire coming from the M42's C101 connector (black wire), since the M10 C101 doesn't have a pin for tach.

Off-topic discussion / Winter driving

I drive my WRX in the winter. The e30 wouldn't be much fun on either the star specs or the rally gravel tires :)
