I hate when online vendors and/or eBay sellers don't provide any frickin' status on shipments so you are left wondering when the hell you will receive something that was supposed to arrive days or weeks ago.  And better yet, when they don't respond to inquiries about the status on said shipments.  It makes me want to give up on eBay and online retailer sites altogether.

Engine + Driveline / M42 mods (what's the potenital)
« on: September 24, 2011, 12:56:34 AM »
Jim Rowe at Metric Mechanic bores & strokes the M42 out to 2.1L and gets about 210HP from it...of course, you're looking at $6.5k or so, but given all that MM does to the engine, it'll probably last until the oil wells go dry.

p.s.  And yes, I'm going to get one someday if I can convince my wife to let me spend that sort of money on a 21-year-old automobile.

Interior / Help identify OEM stereo (pics)

Hello M42club,

Just bought myself a clean '91 318is, my first car. It has some Sony stereo in it now but I'd like to find out what the OEM stereo was.

Found this in the glovebox. Anybody know the part# or model name?

Thanks,

Matt

A little thread necromancy.  That's a Canadian spec radio and the part number is 88 88 1 600 183.  As E30 radios go, it is one of the better ones (although the cassette just crapped out on mine and the whole unit is being replaced with a C43).

I hate the sun roof (rust portal).

Well, there's that, too.

Please leave the sunroof-delete alone and buy a new 318iS if you have to have a sunroof.  They're fairly rare (not to mention about 16 lbs lighter).

Interior / E30 Audio Overhaul - My Project Details

The CD43, installed. I have messed with it a little (took it apart, cleaned the optics & checked the springs/dampers) & that helped reduce the skipping. Radio reception is still awful though. If only there was another factory BMW CD player option...

Did you install an E36 antenna amplifier and trap circuit when you installed the CD43?  If not, check eBay or the CCA website or your local pick & pull as that should (hopefully) fix the reception issue.

So how long until you cave and buy a Metric Mechanic 2.1 Rally motor?  :D

p.s.  Fantastic work, BTW.  I wish I had the skill and the time to do that sort of restoration to my daily driver 318iS.

Off-topic discussion / you one favorite mod e30 m42

Geeze...that's a toss-up.  E36 rack, Conforti Chip, 15x6.5" cross-spokes and COP kit are all neck-in-neck for me.

Now for the mod I would love to do if I could swing the cash (and more importantly, permission from my wife) it'd be a Jim Rowe motor.

Engine + Driveline / Help - weird 318iS fuel pump behavior
« on: February 13, 2010, 02:17:06 PM »

Same here.  It was the connectors in the plug.  New female-end connector leads and the plastic snap-on plug housing which is usually brittle and needs to be replaced are all available from BMW if you want an original fix.

You don't happen to have the part numbers do you?  I can't find them on RealOEM.com...

As an aside, the regulator in the alternator went tits-up last week so that may have been contributing to the problem (e.g. not supplying sufficient current to the pump).  I replaced the DME, fuel pump and O2 heater relays and the belts while I was at it (might as well since all were the factory originals and the latter, especially the alternator belt, were chewed up pretty badly).

I'd buy a Metric Mechanic M42 HiFlow ST Sport motor for $6,500.00 and die happy.  Ask Febi how much he likes his MM motor (granted, he's got the Rally 2100 as opposed to the HiFlow ST Sport).

M42 Buyer's Guide / What is the curb weight of a 318i vs.318is?

I was in the 318, but it wouldn't have mattered which of my cars I was in.  The Z4 would have had the best shot.  The 530i would probably have done better than the 318 did, but not by much.  It's a little sluggish off the line.   Top end is a lot better in that car.

I was just out having fun and he pulled up next to me so I let the M42 work in all its glory.... :D

Some day... some day... (dreaming of turbos and chips and aluminum flywheels and all that other fancy stuff I cant afford...)

I passed a Technoviolet E36 M3 on an onramp a while back and pissed him off (not because I did anything illegal or dangerous, just because of the *audacity*) so he blew by me at something close to 90MPH and rounded the bend straight into a speed trap.

Karma can be wonderful sometimes.
