That's what I am afraid of.  Is there a definitive list of vacuum hoses?  I know that I skipped the one to the brake booster that I guess I need to do next, and then I need to spray test the intake gasket.

This one continues to elude me.

Idle speed is rock steady at 700-800 rpm.  You can feel a rough idle (periodic shake, shudder) but it doesn't show on the tach.

Since I replaced the vacuum hoses, it helped a bunch, but there is still a problem.

Instead of all of the time, now I get a hesitation when trying to accelerate from low rpm.  If I accelerate away from a light, shift at 3-4k, everything is fine.  The only problem is if I am steady state at 2000 rpm or so and try to accelerate.

Something new is that while stopped at a light the check engine light will flash on.  Most times it stays on for a couple seconds and then goes out.  Sometimes it will stay on, and the second I start to let the clutch out and change the engine rpm the light goes out.  It has not come on during steady state driving, or anytime the car has been moving.  Only when stopped and idling.  When it does this, the idle is normal - it doesn't change before the light comes on.  It's the dreaded vague 1222 code.

Check the AFM how?  Spray cleaner or something different?

1992 318i, 110k. Slightly rough idle but not enough to really make the tach move. Intermittent surge on acceleration, usually between 2-3k rpms. Big surge and power rush at the end of it.

No codes, new plugs, checked the resistance on the coils, cleaned the ICV, replaced all of the vac hoses that I could see (valve cover to TB, two large ones off of the ICV, small diameter one for the intake runners, TB to FPR, medium one from TB to ? down near the strut tower).

What's next?

General Topics / does the 92 E36 have a different stomp test

you, sir, are a dang genius.  Thanks for the help!  Now I need to add "figure out how to make WOT actually be WOT" to the list of to dos for the car.

I've tried on a few occasions to get the stomp test to work and have never had luck.  Watched the youtubes and know that I am doing it about right.  Tried lots of variations - start stomping as soon as the key is turned, a little after, pump steady, pump really fast, 5 and let go, hold on 5, 5 and then hold on 6, all to no avail.  Is the 92 different or will I just get it someday?

Engine + Driveline / what is this disc valve?
« on: August 31, 2011, 11:28:23 PM »
Found this flopping around.  Does it fit into that tube just below?  What is the orientation supposed to be for the colors?  Light up or dark up?  For reference, that's the exhaust manifold to the left.  Between the exhause and the strut tower.

What is it?

True, but this is my 14 year old's learning car, so I wanted him to take stuff apart to get comfortable doing it.  Plus, when I was looking this morning and felt it wiggle, I got all excited that I found the source of the drivability problem.

Here is a pic.  92 318i.  The tab on the left is easy to see, there is also one on the right side of the picture.  The coolant loop is just a U that goes around the tube connection in the center and is a separate piece

yep, that's it.  It's not actually attached as near as I can tell - it slips into a couple of loose retainers.  Bummer when you find something loose and it turns out to be right.....

I was going to take off the throttle body on my way to get to the ICV.  As I was looking at the lower bolts I noticed that the plate under the throtle body - that has a coolant hose on both sides, is loose and rattling.  Guessing this isn't right.  What is that part called?  Can't find it in the Bentley.  Wonder if I just found my hesitation/surging problem......

Thank you - late in the day, tired, didn't need to compound my problems....

Engine + Driveline / disconnecting the oxygen sensor

How does the oxygen sensor connector disconnect?  It has the big black plastic round connector.  Does it unscrew, just pull hard or something different?

Engine + Driveline / fuel cleaner now surges on acceleration
« on: June 29, 2011, 09:30:06 PM »
Have only put about 150 miles on new to me 92 E36 M42 with 109k miles.  I drove it 500 miles to the house, then I changed plugs, and ran about 1/4 tank of gas.  I then refilled the tank and added a bottle of Red Line fuel system cleaner.  After driving through approx 1/4 of the tank, I now have a rough idle (never close to dying and needle doesn't bouce, but it'll shake every few seconds) and surging through acceleration.  It seems to be not as bad if I accelerate hard and hold shift to 4000-4500 rpm.  Once I get to speed it is smooth, but with any additional load (pressing more on the pedal) it is surging and not smooth.

I need to check codes, and I searched here and found suggestions all over the map.  I am curious about how this started after the addition of the fuel cleaner.  Any thoughts related to this or just coincidence?

Engine + Driveline / replaced the tensioner, still as loud
« on: June 21, 2011, 01:09:39 AM »
Well, turns out I was a genius and didn't even know it.  Before I tore in I put the valve cover back on took the drive belts off.  Started it and nothing but a purr.  Turns out the AC compressor pulley is able to spin free and it wobbles side to side enough to contact something else metal, giving a nice rattle that sounds just like a timing chain slapping against something.
