General Topics / How much is rear end worth
« on: August 23, 2010, 06:38:10 PM »
I'm debating parting out my 318is or just selling it as a whole. I have an interested buyer for my rear end, 4.10 Lsd. Wondering if someone can give me a ball park price of what I should get for it. about 165k miles on it.

1991 BMW 318i
Exterior : Diamantz Schwarz (Diamond Black)
Interior : Black vinyl, black carpet
Mileage: 158,000 miles
Options: Air-conditioning, sunroof

Provenance: Gentleman in northern Virginia moved to the U.S. and needed a reliable car. Bought this from a CCA member in DC and took very good care of it. Unfortunately, did not know about the profile gasket repair and had to shell out some serious money for this repair. Left him with a bad
taste in his mouth for BMWs where we all know it’s just one of those things with the first iteration of the M42 4-cylinder engine.
Third owner bought it for his son here in Richmond. Older son drives a fully-loaded e46 M3 and thought this would make a nice car for his son but he never could get the hang of a stick shift car. Sold it to me to pay for his Hyundai automatic. Not that I’m a car snob, but we all know that the e30 318i will outperform any Hyundai of any year or model.
I bought it thinking I would have a nice project car to restore over the next few years.
Three kids later and three cars later, it’s time to consider finding an enthusiast who will appreciate the e30 BMW and give this one a good home. This car has been in dry storage for the last 3 years and plugged into a BMW battery tender and taken out about once a month to keep things in order.
It runs well, will pass inspection and has a few minor issues but nothing that affects driveability.
The good:
1. Profile gasket changed at 120,000 miles
2. All odometer/speedometer gears working
3. No oil leaks, coolant leaks, transmission housing, etc.
4. All power windows and locks working
5. Clean title, no accidents/flood damage/salvage title/etc
6. No rust
7. No tears in the seats
8. Non-smoker car
9. No interior leaks including the sunroof which can be an issue but mostly for cars stored outside due to the plugging of the drain channels.
10. Front air dam intact! Very rare in an e30… front air dam has not been torn up, ripped out or cracked.
11. Even more rare… the interior dashboard is intact and without cracks!! Well cared for with vinyl restorer and conditioner.
12. And most rare of all… the under-engine panel intact!!! Even more rare… the plastic panel protecting the engine bay from road debris is still intact
Issues:
1. Non-BMW battery in trunk, need vent tube to be re-adjusted
2. Speaker panels cracked and aftermarket speakers installed. New speaker panels
included as the intention was to replace with Canton or M-Audio speakers and
restore back to factory look.
3.Sony CD-stereo system. I like the stock look myself and with the new iPod wiring
to the stereo systems, can retain factory look. Instructions for e30s were in August
2009 Roundel including wiring instruction.
4.Paint is tired. Could use a good waxing in the interim while deciding about a repaint.
Added Parts:
1. Speaker panels as listed above
2. H1/H4 headlights with BavAuto protectors. Bought them from one of the moderators
of R3VLimited.com who had them in his car and upgraded to European ellipsoids.
They are wired and plug-and-play.
3. Extra M42 valve cover… bought this thinking I would powder-coat it black

That’s the extent of the history on this car. I’m throwing some feelers out there to see if now is
the time to sell the car or put it back in storage with my other cars waiting for another sunny day.
Asking $2400, cash only. No personal checks, no cashier’s checks, no promissory notes, no IOU’s… a pure cash transaction only.

PM and I can send pictures until I can figure out how to post them on the thread.

Engine + Driveline / Head work
« on: November 02, 2009, 11:45:42 AM »
So I blew my headgasket for the second time in a couple years and am going to give it to my friend at a machine shop and he will do anything for free, but I dont know anything about head work and was wondering if someone has a link to a post or can tell me what I should get done, bigger valves? He said he'll shave and resurface it, but I was just wondering about specific measuremants or work besides that.    Thanks for any help

Well I took the advice and gained motivation from reading threads to continue working on my car to get it running like it was when I bought it, and the day I am going to begin working on it I blow my head gasket for the second time in having it for around 3 years, and with a lack of money and being in school I am going to change my headgasket again and try to spend as little money as I can. My problem right now is I'm uneasy about taking the cams and head off without messing the timing up because last time I did this I just took it all off without thinking and had to pay one of my friends at BMW to put it back on, so I'll see what I can do on it, hopefully it will be back to the car I fell in love with.  I would love any tips for the entire headgasket change procedure that might not be in any manuals but learned from experience.

General Topics / My mechanic says my m42 is not worth fixing at 160k miles
« on: September 01, 2009, 11:26:00 PM »
So i've been having an idle issue for the last couple months that eventually caused my car to not idle at stoplights and I have to keep my foot on the gas at lights and when i'm stopped. I had thought it was a leak in the throttle body gasket and replaced that, no luck, I replaced the main relay and cleaned the ICV, no luck, and before this I had taken out the intake and looked at all the hoses without  finding a vacumm leak. So I finnaly allow a mechanic to touch my car and he ran compression checks in the cylinders that passed, but he said the car is not creating any vacumm and he came to the conclusion that the timing is off whether it is from a chipped tooth or if the chain just skipped. It still runs fine when its over 2k rpms and is warmed up.  My friend who worked as a BMW mechanic for a little while and has been with me through my headgasket change about two years ago and knows everything about my car doesnt believe that he can know its off timing and when I asked if the mechanic could prove it to me, he said it would be to exspensive and not worth it to fix. I'm debating on ripping it apart myself and checking the timing, giving up on it and parting it out, giving up on it and selling it whole or any other suggestions I get.  So I guess what i'm asking is what do yall think I should do to spend the least amount of money and come out of this with the best car. I have a 91 318is with 15in BBS's, TMS performance chip, bilstein sports, H and R race springs, I think it has a stage 1 clutch and new flywheel. Recently had a new waterpump, thermostat put in.

I was bleeding the air out of my radiator and tightened the bolt next to the radiator cap to much and broke the thread off in the hole. I got the thread out but have no idea where to get the bolt. I tried lowes but didnt have any plastic bolts that fit. I am still going to try napa or advancce but does any one know where to find one.

General Topics / Water leaking from the water pump
« on: November 18, 2008, 01:40:19 PM »
I bought the o-ring and was going to try and change that cause its a "high performance" water pump and shouldnt go bad and is also more exspensive but as I pulled the radiator and fan out I saw water coming from the shaft so I put my order in for a new water pump.  It was 60$ from bavauto by the way. Hopefully it comes today and I can throw it in and get back up and running.

I dont know i'm going to try and replace the o-ring first because i cant see exactly where the water is coming from because I can only see that close with the radiator out and no water is being circulated with the radiator out. Its a nice waterpump so I dont want to replace is without having to.
