How would I go about conclusively eliminating a faulty ignition switch, I don't want to start taking that apart and finding out that its not the problem

General Topics / Gas leak found but can't fix, help!
« on: July 16, 2012, 09:16:17 AM »
I was just able to remove the hose, got lucky I suppose, I don't have any holes in the pipe so that can't be the source of my ''headaches'' but someone has patched it up before, but now that I got the hose out I'll replace all the hoses, thanks for the help

General Topics / Gas leak found but can't fix, help!

Hi everyone, I had a gas leak on my 318is and decided to remove the gas tank and replace some hoses, I discovered one leak in the braided hose that leads to the expansion tank so bought a new hose but for the life of me I CAN'T REMOVE the blasted thing, it goes through a metal tube inside the cabin with two small pipes, I tried burning it, removed the two pipes but still it doesn't move, any success stories out there? The other thing is that all the studs and bolts that hold the gas tank to the car broke off and when I drilled them out I had no choice to damage the threads. I think I have to tap them but any other suggestions? The other gas leak came from the hose that goes to the charcoal canister was dumping the content of the expansion tank on the road so I ran new hard lines.

Engine management / Fuel tank breather valve

When I bought the car it didn't have a charcoal canister, is it a bad idea not to have one, what exactly is the role of this canister.

Hey there, I'm trying to figure out where my fuel tank breather valve is supposed to go. With the realoem diagram its impossible to tell where it actually goes. Any help is appreciated!

Engine + Driveline / 4.10 LSD now slipping
« on: February 09, 2012, 10:26:19 AM »
Isn't clutch plate and viscous diff the same thing

When one wheel slips a lot more then the other the clutch plates create friction and the silicone based fluid expands when the temperature rises and presses the clutches together. The diff then acts like a set of planetary gears and transfers torque to the opposite wheel. This system is only good for a certain amount of torque and then it starts to slip again, that's why when you have a turbo your diff will act like a open diff.
And where did you guys see rebuild kits, I can't seem to find any.

Engine + Driveline / Coolant flush?
« on: February 08, 2012, 10:15:52 AM »
I use the bmw coolant, the green antifreeze has different composition and different properties, my PO had put green anti and I wanted to flush it all out because if you have some green left in your coolant system and put some bmw coolant in it, they will have a chemical reaction and create precipitations. So I did a few water cycles to flush it all out until the water was clear and then put in bmw coolant.

Engine + Driveline / 4.10 LSD now slipping
« on: February 08, 2012, 10:04:44 AM »
Hey there, my 318is came with a LSD 4.10 and I tested it to see if it still works and it is completely useless. I have the correct diff fluid in it with the friction modifiing additives but it seems that the viscous couplings are worn out. I was wondering if anybody tried to just fix the innards of the diff or if someone has ever tried to swap it with a torque sensitive diff like they have in miatas. Has this happened to anyone else? I have 280 000km

How much did you pay for all the hoses, and did he give you all oem? Very interested because I have to do the same thing!

Just in case you haven't seen the website, although you probably already have
http://metricmechanic.com/
they have great ideas on how to get more power out of an m42 if you want to spend $$

Would it be possible to fix a transistor in the DME if I find which one it is?

Electrical / ECU problem
« on: February 07, 2012, 01:09:41 PM »
Hi there, I have a problem with my ECU that has been troubling me for a while now. Every time my check engine light comes on and I do the stomp test, it always gives me the same code, being the coil pack. I know that this is not right because they are new and because last time it came on my timing chain was broken. This time it comes back on, after I installed a new engine and it runs great (on four cylinders without a doubt) but I get the same code. So I was wondering if I should just find a new ecu or if you think it might be something else.
