General Topics / Tips for Improving Mileage, Most of Which Simple

In an effort to maximize fuel efficiency while keeping performance relatively high, we made a few adjustments to our 318is.

Engine build:
Rebuilt bottomend using 86mm slugs from '95 M3
Machined valve cutouts to drop static c/r slightly in order to use 87oct
Special rods to save rotating mass of over 900 grams
All pistons and rods balanced to within .25g
Very loosely built bottomend
Intake cam advanced xx-degrees
12 pound flywheel (soon to be swapped to 7 pound unit)
stock 4.10 gearing for now, s3.91 in the garage
Weight: 2460 with full stock trim and full tank
Fuel economy over 975 miles:  3 passengers and a loaded trunk -- 37mpg @ 74-76mph.
Should do 40mpg easily running solo.  Oh yea, and it's as fast as a 25i.  :D

This sounds amazing. Do you have an update?
Did you consider using the M44 block for better low-end and therefore mpg?

Engine + Driveline / cams

I would like to know too, I've got a chip and am doing a rebuild right now. Looking for decent performance with no low-end loss, not looking to upgrade anything else.

Engine + Driveline / How to remove and replace a BMW M42 head.

I was driving to the gym the other day and without any warning the engine cut out on me. Rolled into a parking lot and tried to start it, but it sounded like the engine was stuck. Today I popped off the valve cover;

The chain is down there somewhere and there's pieces of the guide all around.

My questions;

1. Is this an interference engine? (I assume so since it won't turn over)
2. What am I looking at to get it going again? I'm sure I'll need a chain and HG kit, but is there anything else essential to replace while it's out? Think the head or pistons will need work? Should I ditch the car and count it a loss?

Thanks guys

Electrical / Help - changed battery but the car won't start

it was definitely a security issue. I disconnected the battery, turned the key all the way on, then re-connected the battery and it started right up.

So my battery started to die and eventually died completely so I installed a brand new one. All the electronics work now, but the security light on the dash is flashing and the 4-way flashers go on for 30 seconds when I try to start it, but it won't start. is there an immobilizer on these cars?

I called him about the exact same thing. He said he just advanced the timing it a little while using an a/f meter to keep it percise. He hadnt dyno'd so there arnt exact numbers to compare the 2, but i dont think its a big gain from 91 to 93. I ended up going with the 93 since they sell 87, 89 or 93 here.
overall i love the chip, felt ~10% gain in the butt dyno.
