Engine + Driveline / Thrust Bearing Ate My Crank
« on: December 01, 2011, 01:56:20 AM »
The MG is what the engine is going into. :D

And I found a used crank over on R3v. Hopefully it turns out to be good.

There's a thread around here somewhere...IIRC an M50's full-radius bearing shells fit right in.

New bearing sets have been updated and come with a full 360 bearing now.

Engine + Driveline / Thrust Bearing Ate My Crank

Ugh, bad news. I went and checked play in the crank of my M42. Endplay is 0.070" and one side of the crank where the thrust bearing is is toast.

BIG gap.

This side looks great.

What are my options? Obviously I could find a used crank in good shape, but could the worn spot be welded and re-ground?

Engine + Driveline / Rod/Main Bearing Bolts Reusable?
« on: November 28, 2011, 12:01:59 AM »
Tried searching on this and came up with nothing. Are the stock M42 rod and main bearing cap bolts reusable, or are they stretch bolts that need to be replaced after use?

Thanks.

M62 uses regular COP coils, not the newer thinner pencil style.

Engine + Driveline / Pencil Coils

I've searched a bit on this topic, but haven't found all the info I'd like. I'm wondering what is involved in making newer style pencil shaped coils fit an M42.

It looks like the pencil coils are a bit bigger around (28mm instead of 25mm) and the connectors are different. But is the wiring the same? Are there any other problems to deal with?

Also, is the only thing holding them in place a friction fit, or do they need some kind of bracket to keep them in place?

Anyone have pictures of their setup?

Engine + Driveline / Oil Pump Pickup
« on: April 20, 2011, 08:41:13 PM »
I'm starting on building a new oil pan for my MGB project and have a question. The stock pan has the pickup built into the upper pan and has a slot/gallery to cover two holes in the block as seen here:

Here is basically where the "slot" covers on the block.

The round hole looks to go to the oil pump while the more square shaped one looks like it is a drain from the timing cover.

My question is, do I need to encase both of these like the stock pan does, or can I make the pickup only over the round oil pump hole?

General Topics / COP Pictures

I'm looking for ideas on a cover that goes over COP conversions. I like the look of the stock plug wire box/cover and have ideas on how to make it work, but what have you guys come up with?

Engine + Driveline / E36 Oil Pan on E30 M42
« on: October 04, 2010, 01:58:25 AM »
Yeah, I already looked and it seems to be all I need, just wanted to clarify. I've seen it talked about here before, but when I search "e36 oil pan" I get nothing.

Engine + Driveline / E36 Oil Pan on E30 M42

The engine is going in my MG, not an e30. :) The crossmember in the MG is far forward, so I will need the rear sump pan, but the engine I have is from an e30. I just need to know what all I need to switch to an e36 pan.

Engine + Driveline / E36 Oil Pan on E30 M42

I'm trying to clarify what all it takes to put an E36 oil pan on an E30 M42. All I need to change is the oil pump pickup and the pan, correct? The E36 pan is once piece as well, right?

Thanks.
