Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Swapping M40 to E36 DISA M42 - Step By Step
« on: July 26, 2010, 05:24:33 PM »
Is it possible to keep the aircon and power steering? It gets very hot here in summer so I need an AC, the ladies like that anyway too so I'd be happy if I can.

Please forgive me if I'm hi-jacking, its just that there aint alota info on M42 swaps.
The South African spec E30's never came with an M42 so I'm forced to use the E36 harness.
I don't understand why more people won't swap M42's into there M40 powered 316i and 318i's.

lower it, then wheels

Yep! I really like the 15" BBS "basket weaves" you guys have in 4 hole fitment. A very dificult find over here. Other favourite is 16" original Alpina's, I don't know why I like these "hard to get" wheels!

You guys have some lovely cars on this forum.

General Topics / 4-door slick top?

My south african 318i is a slick-top 4door, and they aren't rare at all over here! In fact lots of us want to add a sunroof including me. But after reading this I want to keep it the way it is; no extra weight (never thought of it like that)!

Spliffy, can you easily acquire an M42?  I'm not sure how common the motor is in South Africa.  Might be that the M42 head fits right on your M40 block...

You do get some other great cars we didn't, that's for sure.  If there are any 333i's left let me know.  I always thought the Ford Sierra XR8 was a fine idea that we should have had here.

Good day Dave
Luckily the M42 was in all the E36 318i's (E36 318is came with the 1900cc either M44 or M43) so just have to look for 1 with low mileage or a reconditioned 1. I've read that the head doesn't fit the block 100% although I haven't checked it out for myself yet. The other thing is that the E30 M42 ECU isn't here in SA so I'm researching stand alone management systems(something i still know very little about). But there's lots of info on this site that I read through and it helps alot.
I've been unlucky not to have driven in an XR8 or 333i yet. Saddening I know, and where I live Cape Town there are very few 333i's left, e30clusa.co.za is my home forum and we had a BMW fest/track day recently and there wasn't 1 333i. Another favourite is the 2.7litre 325is with the mtech2 kit, love that car! Sorry 'bout this long post!
Looking forward to my next visit!
Kind Regards:)

Hi there guys! Was doing alot of research and reading on the E30 when I first got mine, it immediatly struck me as a car I wanted to keep and drive all the time. But it's slightly underpowered (ZA spec 318i has the SOHC M40) and thats when my quest for knowledge and more power began... I wanted to do a 6pot swap untill I heard about the M42 (found here in the E36 318i). And being a 4pot 16valve fan I googled the "M42 engine" and M40 to M42 engine swaps to get more info and... ... M42club!! perfect!
Thanks guys!
