General Topics / Rear Brakes STICKING
« on: April 26, 2010, 11:29:05 PM »
I have a 1991 318is I noticed recently that there was a sound coming from the rear end. I jacked up the car and found that the rear pads in the back were sticking to the rotor. I took off the calipers and depressed the pistons back in just to test it out and i put the old pads back in but as soon as i put everything back on and drove the car the brake pads were once again sticking to the rotor. I can still drive the car but its eating my rotors. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Calipers? Brake Lines?

Engine management / 318is sputtering problem
« on: April 13, 2010, 12:31:13 PM »
Well I changed an ignition coil, and i tested the other ones i dont think thats the problem because my car is still doing the same thing. Should i just go ahead and get new spark plug wires? You think that should do the trick?

You were right it looks like you had the same problem. It ran good for two days and then it crapped on me again. How would i be able to test the ignition coils to see which one I would have to change?

Engine management / 318is sputtering problem

Thank you guys for the help, I finally got some time off work last night and I changed the spark plugs. It solved the problem instantly! The car was just behaving so badly before that i thought it had to be something more of a pain to change. My old spark plugs were BLACK tho! Is that a bad sign?

Engine management / 318is sputtering problem
« on: April 01, 2010, 03:34:29 PM »
I have a 91 318is, I filled up gas the other day at work and i notice that the car starts to sputter, when accelerating. It loses power in certain rpms and then shoots back up and then starts to lose power and sputter again. Now it has gotten worse and has just started to sputter and lose power throughout the whole rpm band. It also now idles really rough. When idling the rpms keep going down like its about to turn off and then it goes back up. The muffler is also making weird sounds as if something is popping sometimes when accelerating. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I thought it would be fuel related, or vaccuum leak. My friend tells me its just the spark plugs. Im stuck at work for a couple of days and im not going to be able to take it to a mechanic for a little while so i can feel it getting progressively worse as i drive it. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / M42 to M20 Swap
« on: March 27, 2010, 02:48:04 PM »
I have a 1991 318IS, I love the car, but the power does disappoint me a bit. Im looking for something with more power. I dont have the kind of money to try and go the forced induction route so I have been thinking about swapping in a 6 cylinder. i know there are some beefier engines I can swap in, but I found a great deal on an M20B25 from a 1990 325ic with only 109k on the motor. I was wondering if any of you could tell me what is everything i would need to do a swap? ECU, Wiring harness, driveshaft, etc.

Suspension / Help With New Rims!
« on: March 22, 2010, 11:01:29 PM »
Hey guys I just bought new 17 inch Motegi rims for my 91 318is. I went ahead and put them on the car. They fit fine, but I had to take the two front wheels off because when I drive it the car starts to shake and i can hear it rubbing against something in the front. The back wheels are fine i still have them on. The rubbing issue seems to be with the front. The tires I have on there are 205 45 r17. What can I do to stop the rubbing in my front? Please dont tell me i have to get smaller tires because the tires I have on are brand new. Do i need spacers or something like that? The car doesnt look so good with only the back new rims and old front. So im trying to figure out a solution for the rubbing issue in the front. If anyone knows what i can do to solve this problem I would appreciate the help! Thanks for anyones time

Get Togethers / Twin Cities, Minnesota TURBO
« on: March 18, 2010, 01:40:53 PM »
Hey any of you E30 owners around the Twin Cities? I know this is a weird posting so I apologize in advance. I have a 1991 318is, I have done my research and I decided I want to turbocharge the M42 engine. I do not have experience with turbocharging any car so this will be new for me. I dont have the kind of my money it would take to get it done at a shop so I want to attempt it myself. I was wondering if there is any E30 owners who have tried or have experiece in turbocharging an E30 that would be willing to help out with this. I realize that I would be taking your time so I'm willing to hook you up with cash for the extra hand.
Thanks to anyone for their time.

Electrical / E30 318is battery problems
« on: January 07, 2010, 11:34:47 PM »
Ok so winter started and I parked my e30 in the garage. I make sure I dont let it sit too long, I make sure I start and drive it every once in a awhile. Now ever since it started getting really cold up here in mn I come to try and start the car and the battery is dead. That was no big deal it was something I excpected because it was so cold and i havent started it for a while. So I jump start it and it runs fine. I made sure to drive it around too. The problem is now everytime i try and start it up either the battery is dead or most of the time the lights are VERY dim and the battery doesnt have enough juice to start (cranks a little bit the first try but very weak). This happens every time i try and start the car now.If i turn off the car and start it again right away then the car has enough juice to start but if i leave it off longer than like 10 15 mins I try and start the car and the lights will be REALLY dim and wont have enough juice to start. I know this is probably a simple answer but Im a noob so if anyone knows what it could be: Alternator, battery itself... I would realy appreaciate the help. THANKS!

Engine management / e30 318is exhaust question
« on: November 28, 2009, 02:10:31 PM »
I need a new muffler for my 91 318is. I was looking at summitracing.com and they have some pretty nice ones, at a great price. My question is how do I know which one will fit my e30? If you go to summit racing.com and type in super turbo muffler you will see the ones i am talking about. If anyone could help me out that would be great

Engine management / Fuel Leak On 91 318is
« on: November 09, 2009, 03:25:20 PM »
Yeah im thinking its the tank and not the hoses. If i got the new tank, do you have any idea typically how much a mechanic will charge to put the new tank in?
