Engine + Driveline / Re: Swapping M42 engines, need advice
« on: September 11, 2019, 08:54:52 PM »
I ended up pulling just the engines and leaving the transmissions in vehicle. I wanted to keep my trans, so would have had to pull them apart anyways. Also I was concerned if I could maneuver the engine+trans over the radiator core support and still clear the garage door above.

I used a load leveler and got three m12-1.75 100mm threaded rods to use as extended guide pins. These two things helped and we got them mated back up about 90 minutes first engine, 45 minutes 2nd engine.

Engine + Driveline / Swapping M42 engines, need advice
« on: September 04, 2019, 08:50:11 PM »
My e30 318is has a blown head gasket or worse. I will be swapping in a known-good m42 from a donor car in order to get back on the road as soon as possible. My friend is letting me borrow his 2-car garage for the swap so thats another reason to finish quickly. In the interest of minimizing potential issues and time working I need advice.

Which is easier, pulling the engine out by itself or pulling the engine and trans assembled as one unit? The pros and cons as I see it:

Pull engine alone
+ pro: only have to remove downpipe portion of exhaust
+ pro: easier to maneuver than engine+trans together
- con: may have difficulty mating engine and trans back together in the car

or

Pull engine and trans as one unit:
+ pro: don’t have to worry about getting engine and trans mated back together
- con: have to remove and reinstall exhaust, heat shields, driveshaft, shifter, clutch slave
- con: more difficult to maneuver

Ive never pulled an engine or trans on an e30. But on other cars I've had hours of frustration trying to get an engine and trans to mate back up in the car. Sliding the trans input shaft through clutch disc and into the pilot bearing can be a bitch sometimes. Ive never done it on an m42/g240 but am worried it could be the same or worse. What should I do?

For Sale / SOLD:: DASC Downing Atlanta Supercharger

DASC Downing Atlanta Supercharger kit for M42/M44 engines. $2000 shipped from Hawaii to the continental US, or best offer.

Kit originally from E36 chassis so it should fit 318i, 318is, 318ti, Z3 models with 4-cyl engines. Will fit an e30 but more work is needed. This has been in my storage for a long time. It was bought it with the intention of fitting it to my M42 e30 318is but never got around to it. The kit came from an e36 car and it for a serpentine belt setup.  If this is to be installed on an E36 then I'm pretty sure it needs a BMW throttle cable from a right hand drive vehicle. This is due to the setup placing the throttle body in a different position.

Supercharger lobes have a couple small scratches but look to be in good condition (video below). The gaskets between intake manifold to supercharger and supercharger to intake elbow need to be replaced (I disassembled them to inspect supercharger). DIY gasket paper will work for these two gaskets. A couple of smaller hoses have some cracks at the ends but they're not specialty hoses and should be easy to trim or replace. Everything else could use a good cleaning but is in decent condition.

Also comes with new phenolic intake manifold spacer, longer studs and gaskets (helps reduce temperatures and heatsoak). I've also got digital copies of two install manuals and packing lists for e36 kits.

PM me for manuals, packing lists, more pics, questions, etc.

Ignore the second supercharger, I dont have it anymore.

The oil dipstick may be a problem

Why do you think the 25mm mc change made the rear lock up?  Did you keep the e30 proportioning valve?

the original 22/17 master cylinder gives roughly 100% front and 60% rear.

thanks, Slowered318

However, having the rear wheels lock up was no good so I went back to stock.

Why do you think the 25mm mc change made the rear lock up?  Did you keep the e30 proportioning valve?

How many headlights can you do for $25?

Changing accessories from engine-driven to electric may not save as much hp as you hope.  The power to run those electric pumps ultimately comes from the alternator, which is engine driven.  So you've removed the load made by the water pump and power steering pump but added it back through the alternator.

Also, converting energy from one form to another then back again (engine rotating > electric > accessory rotating) is less efficient.  Also2 those electric pumps and plumbing ultimately add more weight to the vehicle.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / M42 head work

Question...

Is the purpose of these lightweight parts to reduce valve / valvetrain float, and to ultimately allow a higher redline?

If so, how high?  What would cam specs look like up there?

Do you ship these via USPS?  Flat rate box?  Checking to see if Hawaii shipping would be same as domestic.

estimated price at this stage is 2300 can$ + YOUR supercharger , no tax, not fixed yet. As a price indicator, the DASC went for 3400+tx, usd. My kit will include important tuning/monitoring components NOT included in the DASC kit.

Thank you for your interest!

As long as you are working on a more refined kit, I would suggest working on a part-throttle bypass sytem as well.

I am interested, even with the current design.  Keep me/us updated.
