Engine + Driveline / idle control valve?
« on: February 20, 2011, 08:52:49 AM »
I dont know how you E30 guys are holding up but the wires on my e36 are getting old and cracking etc where they connect from the DME to the idle control valve and the crank sensor, and the TPS!!!! I have since rewired the ICV and the TPS but am looking at new crank sensor.

Because of this, my car was idling up to 1300, and thenwould drop to 1000, and then up again and down again,  repeatedly, non stop, crazy

guys, check your TPS sensor wires, pull back the rubber boot covering them. I checked mine and 2 of 3 wires were not even really connected anymore and occasionally making contact. I found that if you remove the TPS sensor connectors all together it idles, just high 1000-1100 rpm.

I too and still having idle issues, though, after rewiring my TPS, its not with a factory cable setup though, so i dont know if i 100% solved it. I replaced my ICV last year so im hesitant to replace it again. the only sensors that I haven't replaced are the o2, crank, and tps ,and cam.

I also have an issue where around 3700-4000 rpm rpms sometimes drop and then go up like the car had stopped getting fuel (which is what lead me to the tps)

i just wanted to say Dave i think you were right, i took off the electric tape on the 3 wires to the TPS sensor, and one was broken off again. so i put all new clips on and taped each one individually and now it runs awesome, so far only 1 time where it barely stumbled again like it had. what would you recommend as a fix for this? as far as a permanent solution to my broken wires to the tps sensor

Where is the air intake sensor? Is that different than the maf? Also is the coolant temp sensor the one that gives the reading to the dash gauge? My car is always right about in the middle. All in all these problems are driving me nuts it is always something

Hey guys, its me again

Fixed the rpm crazyness with some new wires to the TPS sensor and it runs great now HOWEVER, it idles very high 1500-2000 rpm, and can vary but normally 1500rpm.

This past spring I replaced the ICV and the MAF. All fluids have been changed, I checked for vacuum leaks, couldn't find any. All new filters etc. Its not throwing any codes or anything. What could this be??!! I am at a loss!

Also related, normally when cruising and letting off the gas the MPG gauge goes way above 40mpg, now it goes barely above 40

Please help!! very hard to drive a stick with the constant extra RPM:confused::confused::confused:

OK UPDATE! for all those wondering and for "some" closure

Did a tune up on the whole car, new plugs, oil change etc and cleaned the crank and camshaft sensors. Still had the rpm issue, then did the "wiggle test" on the TPS sensor cable, car would almost die and rpm would change even at idle.

Pulled back the boot covering the cables, sure enough only one of the 3 wires was even connected and then only by a little bit. So as a short term fix until I can find the right part/cable with clip, we spliced some wires onto the broken ends. and electrical taped it up to the ends on the TPS. CEL light immediately went off and the car does great, it still does it but barely.

Will update again and continue to check the thread

Well I took it to my mechanic, and we checked it all over. We found that the valve cover gasket was leaking a lot of oil into the spark plug "holes"? and that all the spark plugs themselves were really loose in there. So he cleaned the plugs up and put them in good until i can go back and get a tune up on Wednesday.

It did seem to run a lot better on the way home but still did it a little bit as i neared my apartment and was going on a roundabout off the interstate

azrates, I have a Bilstein H&R suspension on the car now, It lowered the car a good bit, the car is my DD and I drive in Atlanta, I would be worried about going too much lower

Hey Dave, thanks again for the response. I just checked the DME compartment and it had some dust and small leaves but nothing that looked like water had ever been in there. , although there is no telling.

I am really irked by this, i have to run to my mechanic to get it on a lift for the o2 sensor.

I will report my findings

Hey Dave, well I have a CEL but have been trying the stomp test for a long time and it does not work on my car anymore. I was able to do it quite easily this past spring but now it does not work at all. I even unplugged the battery and the CEL was still on. idk what is wrong, very frustrating

Hey guys, 1993 318is 5spd here. This has just started happening within the past month or so. Here is what happens

While getting up to speed 50% of the time when the rpms get above 3k, (usually just under 4k) the rpm gauge goes nuts and engine seems to cut in and out sporadically and like crazy. Especially when its maintaining highway speeds right under or at 4000 rpm. The car bucks and jerks. I thought it was fuel filter however the car actually did while i was decelerating while in gear going down a steep hill.

What would cause this? It seems to be getting worse and doing it more.
Could it be Fuel filter? I have heard possibly a crankshaft sensor.

This car is my daily Driver and I love it, Help me save her!

here is a picture of her

Engine management / Exhaust from a 323, 325, 328?
« on: January 20, 2010, 09:45:23 AM »
I was wonding if an exhaust from a higher model BMW would flow better and emit less noise . Wouldn't it be quieter than a 318is muffler and weigh about the same?

Engine management / CAI actual gains? worth the cost?
« on: January 19, 2010, 07:05:01 PM »
I have really read some conflicting information on these for our cars. Some say a few ponies can be gained, others, nothing and that the stock intake is well designed. I had to get new exhaust a while back, so i have a magnaflow thing, sounds meh, but it is almost straight through so I imagine it flows pretty good. but i have also heard the stock exhaust is good.:confused::confused: I am looking to do all the non turbo mods now, see if they can tide over my hunger for more power, im coming from a firebird. Bmw out handles the bird and is awesome but needs more ooommf!!!

the weight issue is the best point against it. It might, as unfortunate as it is, be best to save up and get that alluminum 318 specific radiator. It was just a 400$ difference. lol  Why do modern cars have this plastic rad crap? my dads pickup had plastic tanks on the side of his, of course it broke. The rad on my 76 firebird, was all brass, it lasted for 34 years of constant use!
