Desktop dave, or anyone,

I now have a m44 with schick [sp] cams in it,  the m44 i didnt reolise the DME is more closed , i mean, you cant swap the chip, so if i want to play with the ecu i have to spend 3x as much, but i have a enda chip in a m42 dme.

So, im looking at this again for this m44!

How can i find out if both looms are the same at the DME plug? The motor now has a m44 loom on it.

Does anyone else know of anyone who has done this???

thanks!

I have a E36 compact, it was 1600, its a 1998 car, i dont know if it had obd2 cable port or not, but i know it has nt now! I think i removed the plug not reolising what it iwas.

So, i have bought a 20pin type cable that goes to the k line, to a obd2 then to a serial type computer port.

the car now has a m44 from a 1997 car.

questins a re,

is there any software readibly available to use with this cable?
can i recode a key to my DME?

thanks!

On the m42 earlier engines, you can cut wire no.7 and it will start, but on the later models, there isa  black/purple wire here, and that does no difference.

\this little chip is the only reason im not doing a auto solo in the car tomorrow... after spending a lot of money, time etc, i cant believe it...

I'm not sure about the cam, but I know that the M44 and M42 crank sensors are not interchangeable.  You need the crank snout sensor and "missing tooth" 60-2 crank wheel for the earlier M42 DME to work.

right, crank sensor is longer, cam sensor is shorter.. I dont knwo if the plugs are the same as tehy have been chopped off when the manifold was removed! typinal scrappy heavy hands...

Cam is read off 4 blades which bolt onto the n/s cam pulley, but i recon teh pulleys will swap along with the front covers to mount the cam sensor and the crank sensor if i needed to put the m42 front pulley on. I think the pulley will fit.

But when i took the rocker cover off, i noticed the cams where rusty, so im thinking what stat is this motor in, it had leaves in the plug holes, so it looks like my mate has kept it outside...

so its time to spend even more money on ANOTHER engine!

thanks for your help though mate!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  The only sensor differences I'm aware of are:
The M44 has the wrong crank sensor.
Later M4x have one coolant temp sender, earlier motors have two
The later DISA intake manifold is different...but both your motors have that, right?
Later M4x have knock sensors, but it's no problem to leave them unplugged if needs be

I wouldn't figure it'd matter, but I'm no expert.

i have noticed the m44 has the one sensor for the coolant, but i think it does the same job as one, but im not sure.

The cam shaft sensor is on the other cam, and the crank sensor is ont he back of the block not the nose. So, i was thinking the m42 can sensor would fit int he m44 cover, and the crank one the wire will reroute to the back of the block.

So im thinking maybe these are the only two hurdles.

BUT im not sure

Since the first  post i haev taken the old motor out and i have just come home for something to eat, i think ill go back now and carry on!

I have a compact with a m42 engine in it, it's just seized up on me, long story.

I have a m44 with nothing on it, it looks like the inlet and exhaust from the m42 fit only real difference I have noticed is the crank sensor is in a different place

Can I dress a m44 in m42 stuff???

I am doing a rally this weekend so I need to know ASAP!!!

Help please!

Engine + Driveline / Fan Delete Mod
« on: December 04, 2011, 01:20:57 PM »
I have a e36 now with a blown motor, and i have a few questions.

My engine is a factory m42, with a Viscus fan, and on the last rally, a branch has gone threw the bumper, smashed the VF housing, knocked the rad off its mount, and stopped the VF from turning.

Now, when we got to the end of the section, we stopped for about 2 mins and i heard steam escaping somewhere so i checked the temp guage and everything was ok. I kept checking the guage on the way to the finish and it went onto 3, then stopped.

The engine now has no compression, and is dead but when i checked the guage it was still at normal.

So i want to do this conversion, and i need some info on what to do.

So i have a new rad and electric fan like shown above, i think its off a 328 but im not sure. The sensor on the side of the rad is the one for the turning the fan on? That is what i see said before.

Also, as my motor died really due to the sensors not picking up the temp letting me know to stop teh car, is there any other place to mount the sensor for the guage? Is the sensor for the fan ina  good place too?

I heard of a low water sensor on some cars too, is that right?

thanks!
