Yeah just drill the heads off and the bolt will come out easy with vise grips, the head has a lot of surface to rust in place

Electrical / AC and resurculation light.

Should both of these buttons light up with the headlights like the hazard and rear defog switch do?  I have installed another switch for another reason and it is dark at night to, but if you push either button on they light up, just not with the headlights?

Electrical / What did I do to my car?
« on: December 08, 2009, 02:05:26 PM »
Was the CD player brand new?  I bought a newer used Alpine of Ebay and it has an internal short and will drain my battery in a few days if I don't run the car.  Should have showed up on your fuse test, but I would just unhook it an see if that is your trouble.

Engine + Driveline / M42 weird starting issue
« on: December 05, 2009, 05:28:19 PM »
My pump primes in the #2 position once, I do not know what the conditions are for it.  If you try to reprime it does not do it.

Anybody had the line from the pump to the filter break.  I noticed mine is and it looks like there is no way to repair it unless you remove the tank, or splice it under the second access port under the seat.  The return line looks like it can only be replaced with the tank out.

General Topics / What my mess looked like

Here are some pics under my intake, notice how clean intake ports are, how dirty the injectors, and the lower ICV hose.  There were many more vac leaks.  My car ran well but I just figured this needed to be done with 193000.  I am adding new injectors and painting the upper intake with black crinkle.  I have already painted the valve cover.

Exterior / Fog Lights

The car is pre wired, they are tucked up behind the lower valance near the headlights.  The wiring is there for the switch tucked up near the airbag computer and all you need it the lights, the relay and the switch and install two fuses.

M42 Buyer's Guide / DINAN CHIP, ebay
« on: November 12, 2009, 03:11:45 PM »
I have one of these chips purchased off ebay for a 91 318is,  the car runs much smoother and it does have more pep, I paid $54 shipped.  It may not be as agressive as the Mark D, but it is well worth the price.  My mileage has dropped about 2 mpg, but that could be due to my newer heavy foot.  I was getting 29 now 27 on my loop.  Takes less than an hour to install and is a great mod.

General Topics / What's your MPG per gallon/tank?
« on: October 30, 2009, 09:09:01 AM »
After I got my ODO fixed my first tank was 29mpg.    On my second tank after I put my heavy 16" wheels and Dinan Chip in I pulled in 26.  Im about to fill up for my third tank today or this weekend.  It looks to be 26-27.  I drive about 1/2 freeway and 1/2 city

M42 Buyer's Guide / Looking for a 1991 e30 M42
« on: October 28, 2009, 03:11:28 PM »
What have you driven before on a daily basis is the main question?

I have a Modified G8 Gt with 400hp at the flywheel and I still have fun with the the 91 318IS 5 speed.  It moves pretty good in first and second.  With a chip and some other things done it is not much slower than a 1988 325IS I used to have.  Also it gets much better mpg than the 325is.  I have a 95 miata with a 1.8 with 130+ hp and that car is 400 pounds lighter but it seems slower than the 318IS.

Yes we all want more power and I plan on putting either an M3 motor or a LS motor when my m42 goes, but it is still a very fun smooth running 4.

My suggestion from a long line of restorations, is buy the nicest car you can afford.  A fixer upper will cost wayyyyyy much more in the long run.   My car now has around 200k and passed emissions with the lowest score of any car I have ever seen.   So if you find a nice mileage car do not give up on it, one with 110,000 that needs everything is not a good deal.

Suspension / Rear window movemnet since lowered
« on: October 27, 2009, 01:28:54 PM »
All,

Has anyone else noticed their rear window making a squeaking sound from the chassis flexing now that you suspension is much harsher.   I have bavarian auto springs and Bilstein shocks and have upgraded to 16" wheels with 205 50 16 neo-gens by nitto.   Now everytime I go around a corner hard I can hear the back glass squeak in its frame when it's under a load.  It is very annoying.  Nothing about the window is loose as far as looking or touching.  The car has about 200k.  Only thing I could think of was a rear tower brace or having the window reinstalled.

Engine management / Installed Dinan Chip - Nice & it was free!
« on: October 20, 2009, 02:13:05 PM »
Just got one of these Dinan chips off ebay for under $50 shipped and I am very impressed.  Car has really pepped up.  Way worth it for the money and 15 minutes it takes to install.  May not be the best but it does make a difference.  I have had 3 M cars with Conforti Shark injectors I installed and this was equal to what they offer.

Electrical / cluster problems!!!!!!
« on: October 05, 2009, 03:32:22 PM »
Does everything but the Tach not work, then it is your SI board.  I had problems with both the temp and fuel gauge and it was the ground nut that had fallen off of both of them causing erratic readings.

Interior / E36 steering wheel fit in the e30?
« on: September 29, 2009, 06:47:00 AM »
Just tried this, hub is not the same size, and the trim would never line up right, clock spring is wrong, just lots of problems without changing the hub.

Interior / E30 Dash Swap problem
« on: September 27, 2009, 07:17:57 PM »
I just swapped in a dash from an 88 E30 into my 1991 318IS,  well all went perfect till I went to put the lower trim piece over the Knee panel just below the wheel.  Apparently there was a change when they went to airbags I guess.  My old dash had a metal insert along the bottom that held three "nutserts"  that the three screws went into.  Well the new dash has the three holes but it is just made of foam,  anybody had any luck with this?

Interior / What tooth gears for MOTOMETER odometer
« on: September 14, 2009, 09:43:55 AM »
I need to know what tooth main gear goes in a motometer odometer for a 91 318is,  mine is missing teeth and you can't order without it.  I had bought another cluster that was out of a 1991 but it's a VDO and after I fixed it the SI board is bad.  So if anybody needs a working VDO speedo/odometer with new gears let me know.
