Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Re: m42/m44 stock manifold turbo adapter
« on: October 08, 2015, 03:02:35 AM »
That's not for m42/m44.
That's for the m43 (kind of a m42/4 block with 8valve head instead of the 16v one).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M43

A few companies sold that adapter in the late 90's/eartly 00's here in europe. IIRC Mosselman was one.

M43 engine wasn't for sale in USA, only europe and some other places around the world (not usa).

m42/m44 and m43 manifolds are very different, the flange where that adapter bolts is different both in pipe sizes (holes) and bolt spacing.

Also m42/4 manifolds are longer and tubulars, the m43 is a more compact cast one.
The head flange is completely different between m43s and m42/4s, so the m43 manifold will not fit.
IIRC that adapter has a T25 turbine flange, but double check this, I may be wrong.

just to give you an idea, this is the m43 manifold, that adapter fit on this:

and this is the m42/m44:

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Re: JRW'S 91 318is turbo build
« on: October 01, 2015, 10:31:15 AM »
this build is a pleasure to watch.
I know that turbo, a bit old school but works great on this engine.
IIRC I had (years ago, not anymore) 7-8 psi at 2800 rpm on a m44, internal wg too. Not too bad, but I had the .48 turbine housing  :)
Maybe you'll want a bigger one now that engine is fully built.
A little scared about the 86.5 bore, how much wall left between pistons? usually that bore is used on high revving N/A, but if correctly tuned and built it will not be a problem.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Re: LOL (e36 m42 turbo vertical mount)
« on: February 15, 2015, 02:58:55 PM »
I'm pretty sure that small turbo was just put there to take a funny pic...

and this is the real one  ;)

BTW they modded the sump, but it's still wet not dry. Surely modded the pump pickup etc.
Who knows if oil drains properly inside the engine when vertical like that or if there are areas where it could pool...

Also they did the dirty way on the gearbox: cut the gearbox bell housing to rotate it and rewelded.

Just spotted this online... don't know if it has ever been posted here.
A little teaser:

not mine and don't know him. But I thought it was fun to share.
Huge props to them, seems funny.

Worth it? No way ;D , but funny project for sure!
(still lol at all that space at the exhaust manifold side ;D)

excellent. If not, I might be able to to wrap a wire around the throttle body and measure it, then find a diameter of a circle with the same measurement for the circumference.
By memory it should be around 3.5", but don't trust me, measure it!  :)

Engine management / M42/M44 ECU pinouts
« on: January 23, 2012, 02:12:54 AM »
that's wrong.
M44 has different pinout, it uses M5.2 Bosch DME... don't use those diagrams for m44 otherwise you could fry something ;)

here is etm for e36, check for the correct one...

Will it be possible to switch off completely injectors near cylinder head when others will start to squirt?
Megasquirt3 + MS3X can do that. :)

Transition fully to secondaries -                  This setting is used to determine whether the fully staged state means                 that the primary and secondary pulse-widths are equal, OR if the fully                 staged state means that primaries are shut down completely and staging                 transitions fully to the secondary injectors. The following settings                 are possible:

  • Off -                          The fully staged state means that the primary and secondary                         injector pulse-widths are equal.
  • On -                          The fully staged state means that the primaries are shut down,                         and staging transitions fully to the secondary injectors.

MS3+MS3x is the bomb for its price (coupled with Phil Tobin's TS registered, best few bucks I ever spent for software, awesome support)

It's M44. Not mine. Found in the internet time ago.

I still prefer ITBs and modern standalone ecu, everything under control...

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Diesel M43 m47 Swap possible?
« on: January 04, 2011, 02:27:12 PM »
IIRC the bolt pattern between our transmission (in my E36 318is) is same with M47 one, but the M47 engine is inclined differently since engine inclination is differently.

so our trasmission *should* fit, but it would sit inclined with all the problems this could give.

don't trust me, double check this.

You guys need to come up with a turbo kit for the car, so I can buy it!
it would be too pricey for the average guys here, quality stuff has its cost! :)
