MWerks Project car with the Plaid interior.

Here's the build thread; http://mwerks.com/artman2/publish/project_318is/

In the past year I've replaced the lifters, replaced the cooling system and alternator.. The car now has 150,000 and needs an a/c charge.

5,000 OBO.

Yes, the o-ring is on the thermostat. I'm reaching my wit's end on this thing,

I just purged it again thinking that it was some air behind the thermostat, but again, I get the hissing once the system gets up to pressure.

Anybody want to buy a 318is with a custom interior?

My guess is that there is some RTV in the bolt hole and it won't allow the bolt to go in as far as it needs to.

I had the same assumption and tried to throw a few more washers on that bolt to move it further up the hole, and still had the same issue.

New thermostat housing and gasket, cleaned the bolts to get all of the RTV off and the same issue.

My bleeder screw is happy and the system is holding pressure...well atleast until all of it oozes out of the thermostat housing. All four bolts were torqued to 11 lb/ft.

Any ideas?

I've got another thermostat housing that I can use. I'm going to order another gasket and give it another go tonight.

I will add that drilling a hold in the thermostat does make bleeding a lot easier.

I replaced the radiator and thermostat today trying to calm down an unstable temperature gauge. The system bled properly, but now I've got a hiss and some steam coming from the top right bolt of the four on the thermostat housing.

I've tightened the bolt as much as I comfortable doing with the aluminum and such. Am I missing something or could the thermostat housing itself be cracked.

Is there a pattern to the 1/4 turn method?

I've tried Seafoam, Lucas Valve Treatment and I've currently got Marvel in the sump, but my valve tick isn't going away.

Do I need to get the BMW tool to compress the valves or is there a different way to unbolt the cams from the head to get at the lifters. Any advice would be appreciated.

Engine + Driveline / Alternator Bushings - or a bigger issue
« on: February 13, 2010, 09:15:19 PM »
Pulled the alternator and the alternator mount off today. Looks like the issue is with the alternator itself.

The body of the alternator is aluminum with steel inserts where the bolts go through the mount for the pivot and the adjuster. My alternator is missing the steel inserts so the hole for the alternator bolt holes have bored themselves  out.

I got it all back together with the new bushings, but it looks like I'll have to buy another alternator, which sucks, because other then the bolt holes being ovals, this one works fine. Ugh.

Engine + Driveline / Alternator Bushings - or a bigger issue
« on: February 11, 2010, 08:47:55 AM »
So my alternator/waterpump belt jumped off the pulley and ground itself into mush last week. I got a cheapy, cut off the power steering and a/c belts and changed the alt belt with the trunk tools. I bought 3 new belts and threw those on thinking that the old belt was simply old...wrong.

The next day the alternator/waterpump belt jumps again. I caught it early and got the belt on twice only to have it jump off in a gas station parking lot. I had the car towed home and it looks like the alt has a nasty list.

I ordered the bushings and I plan to put them in this weekend. Has anybody else run into this before, I couldn't find any threads about it and I was wondering if there could be larger issues, like a say a water pump going south.

No broken teeth. Just paranoid about the engine that's all.

I started going through the engine on my 318is checking trying to fix the annoying oil leak and valve tick. Aside from the threads missing from one of the valve cover bolts (grrr, previous owner) everything looked pretty good.

Just for giggles, can I get a second opinion on these cam gears.

Now to price lifters...
