Engine + Driveline / Coolant temp sensor low voltage?

hey guys I'm gettting 3.4v at the coolant sensor loom pin, been tracing it back and still 3.4 at the loom under the cowl, it seems to split into the ecu and the fuse box? which was exactly does it go? and what is causing low voltage? car is a 1994 318is m42, many thanks. Serge.

Dave, thanks for the reply, I tested my clutch fan and it still seems to be on par, I noticed my aux fan is not coming on either, checked all the fuses etc..

Also my left bottom hose remains cold even when she overheats, is that normal?

Is this where my problem lies? the aux fan?

I have made too many posts and I apologise from now on I will stick to only this one, firstly I have replaced head gasket, all gaskets, seals, etc.. I put her all back together and I am overheating, I compression tested the engine and she is very healthy sitting at 180psi on all 4 cylinders.

I have tried 2 different thermostats, 2 water pumps, I have bled the system so much that there is barely any coolant left in the system as the water has overcome it. The engine seems to warm up very quickly from cold say approx 4 mins? I have bled the system accordingly including draining rad and block many times

Here is a list of all the items I have replaced

1. All vacuum and rubber fuel hoses
2. All gaskets intake, exhaust, head gasket, timing case profile gasket, valve cover gasket you name it I replaced it.
3. All coolant and radiator hoses
4. Oxygen sensor
5. Throttle Position Sensor
6. Spark plugs
7. Ignition Leads
6. All pulleys
7. All belts
8. Fuel/ Oil/ Air filter
9. Coolant Temperature Sensor (still have issue will get to that)
10. Coolant temperature sending senso (to cluster)
11. Knock sensors x2

The head was machined and pressure tested without any dramas.

Only three concerns are

1. The overheating
2. Very low bumpy idle at approximately 400- 600rpm (nearly stalls
3. Peake Research tool throwing up coolant temp sensor fault

The car is a 1993 318is M42 4Spd Auto.

All the parts are genuine BMW purchased from Pelican parts (cost me an arm and a leg)

There are no other fault codes apart from the coolant temp sensor error, which I figure must be a short or ground within the engine harness, I will get onto that.

What symptoms would arise from coolant temp sensor? bad idle?

She seems to have a slight miss, I will replace the coil pack and new fan clutch and report back...

Any help from anybody would be very highly appreciated as I'm running out of clues, patience and money. Serge

Engine + Driveline / Engine Compression Figures?
« on: July 24, 2009, 12:03:18 AM »
Just did a compression test on my m42 and all cylinders showing 180psi, is that a good or a bad reading, what is the factory spec? cheers.

Engine + Driveline / Coolant Temp sensor dilemma
« on: July 23, 2009, 06:47:24 AM »
Peake research tool threw up the error for coolant temp sensor and knock sensor, bought new knock sensor and temp sensor, installed the lot, knock sensor code disappeared after battery disconnect for 24 hours but the coolant temp sensor is still there e4 from memory, anyhow what are the symptons for a dead/dodgy coolant temp sensor? and most importantly how do I get it to go away? is there a way to clear codes apart from disconnecting the battery? car is a 1993 318is.

Engine + Driveline / Overheating Please Help
« on: July 23, 2009, 12:18:27 AM »
when I rev the temp needle falls back to normal... I had the head pressure tested and machined, will hunt down a new fan clutch and keep posted, thanks for the suggestion this has go me stumped.

Engine + Driveline / Overheating Please Help
« on: July 22, 2009, 01:05:22 AM »
I have replaced the bloody head gasket, new gaskets all round etc... the car overheat when idling, no white smoke nothing at all, I noticed when I rev the bugger the needle drops back to centre, bring it back to idle and the needle pegs up... I have a new thermostat, belts and water pump, with new hoses the whole 9 yards... obviously the coolant isn't circulating properly or fast enough... any input would be great. Sere.

Engine + Driveline / Overheating after Head Gasket Replacement?
« on: July 12, 2009, 11:40:17 PM »
ok thanks for the input, I have drained all the coolant from system including the block and started again. Filled her up etc... got a little better with the heater on there is now a little bit more heat coming from it but still quite nada.

My question is, if the coolant hoses which run to the throttle body and intake plate are mixed up could this cause my problem?

Also ran a scan and pulled up e4 on the peake research tool, which indicated the coolant temperature sensor failure. Could this be causing my problem? I thought the sensor only sends the temp to the ecu not to the cluster?

Another thing could I have installed the thermostat in the wrong way? therefore this issue?

As I said the water pump is brand spanking new along with hoses, thermostat etc...

There was no thermostat in there before due to the PO being a bit of a shady character... so this shouldn't affect the opeation of the car:)

Any input would be great,

Thanks Hater Proof for your input :)

Engine + Driveline / Shift interlock cable help.
« on: July 12, 2009, 06:46:46 AM »
As nobody answered my question and I have figured it out myself, for anyone wanting the answer also there is no remedy to this situation as this particular 1993 318is does not have a shift interlock cable on the shifter side, but seems to have it's steering column replaced from a car with the interlock function, therefore it needs to be screwed into the column in order for the key to come out, the other end with the eyelet dangles in mid air...
