Engine management / Did I fry the Motronic?
« on: November 05, 2010, 01:20:40 AM »
Well, it turns out it wasn't any fuse or DME. The plus (R/W wire) of the 3-pole plug was fried. There was no 12V going to the injectors. Fixed it, put everything back together, ca drives like a dream again.

Engine management / Did I fry the Motronic?

Thanks for the tips. I'll check all this today. I already sourced a spare DME for 30,- which I only need to pay so can't go wrong there.
What I can say is, that the spark plugs work and so does the fuel pump. After cranking over several times I don't smell any fuel, neither in the inlet or on the dipstick. The injesctors clearly aren't squirting. Silly me, small mistake, big consequenses.
I'll post an update when I figured it out, for future reference.

Engine management / Did I fry the Motronic?
« on: November 01, 2010, 12:36:07 AM »
Afters doing some work on the intake manifold I turned the key to drive the car out of the shop. Poof! Shortcut. Turns out the wiring to the injectors got stuck between the U-shaped profile for the right-hand side bolt of the manifold, between the engine and the fire wall. Now the car won't run anymore.

I fixed the wiring - no great damage, I only had it on "run" for a second, mostly new insulation. Then I checked the fuses but could not find a single broken one. I put new ones in 10 and 11 to be certain, but to no avail. I'm fearing I may have toasted the ECU, or perhaps the main white relay?

I'd like your views before I dig into this and buy a new Motronic or take apart the wiring.

Engine + Driveline / these cars are frustrating
« on: May 05, 2010, 12:54:14 PM »
So did you check the head for cracks when it was off? If you still have whipped cream in the oil pan it suggests there's still a leak between the oil and cooling system.

Engine + Driveline / Power loss at low rpm
« on: May 05, 2010, 12:50:02 PM »
Yes I already took care of the snake nest a year and a half ago. As far as I know that's only relevant for the icv.

I was thinking going cop but first the car has to pass mot. If I get past that without spending I'll invest in cop.

Engine + Driveline / Power loss at low rpm
« on: May 05, 2010, 03:53:26 AM »
Since a little while the car suffers from a lack of power at rpm's below ~3k. This occurs especially when cold, but not necessarily. Then the engine starts bucking a little as if kicking out a bad hangover. After that, in the higher rpm's, there's nothing the matter.

I suspect bad ignition but I can't seem to relate that to rpm. I also have a leaky center exhaust pipe which I need to replace one of these days. Could it be there's a lack of counter-pressure from the exhaust system at low rpm?

Tia!

s14b25 with alpha n make 270 HP.

No way. AN increases throttle response and will add a few horses (~2-5).
But anyway, not to hijack this thread, I'd love to see a blog of your m42b21 project. Interesting to say the least.

Engine + Driveline / Starter replacement (how to?)
« on: October 15, 2009, 03:32:04 AM »
The starter in my '90 318is is starting to make spooling sounds, and sometimes just making a loud CLICK when I make contact. We all know what this is going to amount to so I need to acquire a new one. I looked down the engine compartment and it looks like a hellish job to do the exchange. I noted some torx head bolts. Is there a good trick or standard procedure to do this? What do I need to remove to get some space to work in?

Ad is in German, but it's pretty clear what's included. Anyone any experience with this seller? Seems like a reasonable price... if it's any good. Dude's got 100%fb.
