Engine + Driveline / Hole in upper timing cover

My mechanic just informed me about this hole in my upper timing cover on my 91 E30 318i M42 motor. In was in the shop to get an alternator replaced. I have no idea how it happened, I didn't hear any strange noises while driving it home from the shop. The area around the hole is bent outward. I just moved from sea level to 6200 feet (1900 meters) and to drive the M42 at altitude, you've got to drive it like you stole it to keep the revs up. The power at low RPMs at altitude is abysmal.   Obviously the upper timing cover needs to be replaced and the oil pan needs to come off to see what parts are in the pan.  What scares me is the internal damage that I can't see. I'm thinking the chain guide came loose and the chain hit the timing cover.  I'll know for sure what happened when I get a look for a better inspection. Amazing this motor is still running.   Thoughts from the group?

Interior / Overhead check control panel on 318i?

Has anyone ever retrofitted an overhead check control panel on a base model 91 E30 318i? The 318is coupe had the overhead control check panel but the sedan just had a check seat belt and airbag light. I disconected that when I converted from an airbag steering wheel to a M-Tech1 wheel.  If the wiring is already in place (i.e., foglight wiring in place for E30's that have foglight delete) I suspect it would be an easy install.

General Topics / Recommendations on a repair shop in the Hampton Roads area?

Anyone recommend a good shop in the Hampton Roads, VA to install a drive shaft in my 91 318i? Just moved from the left coast to the right coast and I'm hearing a clunk under the car at low speeds when I let off the gas. From what my mechanic told me in CA before I left is that my U-joints in the driveshaft are going south.  I've sourced a rebuilt driveshaft from Mesa, just looking for a local shop to install it.  If anyone has been there, done that, would appreciate some tips, i.e, while I'm in there... new guibo, CSB, etc...
