Suspension / E36 steering rack conversion
« on: January 25, 2007, 08:56:24 PM »
Has anyone here done the E36 sterring rack conversion on thier 318is?

Is it much improvement??  I know the turning circle is greatly reduced (turns lock to lock), and it's quicker, and should have better feel (I hope).

I think I'm about to do it.  I've got to change out the steering pump, and I think the rack isn't holding up so well either.  I figure it's time to replace it, and why not get an E36 rack, as I hear it's not difficult to convert.

I had looked at a really good (detailed) write up on how to do the convesion, but can't remember which site and where.  I've tried searching, but can't seem to find it.

If anyone has the link...   It would be greatly appreciated.  :D

Im running 205/50/16 bfgoodrich GForce Sport tires (75 a pop w free shipping from discounttiredirect.com) and absolutely love them. Great grip, quiet and cheap. Look into them.

That's a great tire as well, esp for the price!

I've got the Hankoock RS2's and been very happy with them thus far.  It's seen track duty twice and was impressed with the grip, in dry and wet.

Cool man.  Have an idea which results in a good rear subframe for your coupe.  :)

It looks like the gas tank can be dropped with the subframe all in place.  Of course, the driveshaft and the exhaust will have to be removed, but want to make sure the rear S-frame does not need to be removed to replace the gas tank.

I have a good tank being re-vatted right now, and I guess it takes a couple of weeks for that stuff to cure.  Might be going to S-frame R&R this weekend, but will wait it out if it's neccessary to have it out of the way to replace the gas tank.

Any info or BTDT appreciated.  Thanks.

My car sat for about a month and a half, but wouldnt' start.  Thought it was just a weak/bad battery, so I replaced it.

I have since flooded the engine and fouled the plugs.  :(

Car has power, starter is turning over and it's obviously getting fuel, but I'm not getting spark for some reason and car will not start.

What things do I need to look for???   Easiest to most difficult, where should I check first, etc...

Any help greatly appreciated.

I heard bad opinion about RS-2, but didnt heard bad apinion about GY eagle F1 GS D3 ;)

What exactly have you heard?  I have these on my Koseis and I really like them.  Same general characteristics of the Azenis, but has better wet traction.  Actually, I can tell you the wet grip is amazing.

Like most performance tires, they need some heat in them to really get max dry grip, but I really like them.

This is how I buy tires though:  Worst treadwear rating for that speed rating, at lowest price.  :D

Is that what you've accumulated under your ownership? You should see my folder that dates back to the first owner.

Planning to part your car? If so that's sad news to hear.

No, not parting this car.  I have a parts car I bought a while back.  Shell is long gone, but still have a basement full of parts.  I need to clean it out of here so they will go on the sale block as soon as I have some free time.

Don't hold your breath anyone...  been a busy few months.

Trying to find a pic of the parts car, but not having any luck.

So, I put all my reciepts for the 318iS in a stack..   a very big stack that is, and wow...     No, I havne't had the balls to actually add up what I've pissed away on this car, but just the height of all the reciepts stacked up is enough to send shivers down my spine.

So, I've attached here, two pics to show what I'm talking about...

P.S.  I will have many parts off my parts car available soon, including complete tan vinyl sport interior.

Ok so after doing another quick search, what seems to pop up the most is the epoxy. apparently thats the way to go. so now all i need to decide is what brand. the two i've been looking at are rust-oleum and quikrete. i think they're probably the same thing. the rust-oleum one has a nice video though to show how its done, kinda. Anyway, I'll make my decision in the store i guess. i'll snap some photos when it's done.

Thanks for the input!

My suggestion is:   DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

This is good for people who own new cars that leak nothing and don't do work in thier garage.  If you do, just clean up the floor well and put a sealer on top.

Unless you spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$  to get a real professional grade job done (like I've seen in an aircraft hangar and multi-million dollar race shop), I wouldn't touch the stuff.  Especially the Lowe's/Home Depot DIY kits.

I highly reccomend you don't do it...   Gas, brake fluid, etc.. will all screw with it.  Just my $0.02 worth.
