i'm changing gearbox from standard m42 e30 to m42 e36 box, i'm thinking of changing flywheel at the same time. will the m20 fly wheel work with this set up? also will the m44 box work the same?
many thanks

Engine + Driveline / e36 trans into e30

hi, desktopdave recently mentioned to me that a e36 m42 trans maybe a direct replacement for a e30 m42 box. Does anyone know of anyone who has done it. Any links would be excellent. Cheers m42 fans.

looks like i'm going to go for the m40 box. Cant find a m42. I've been told that the output flange is not the same. Does this mean i'll have to use a m40 prop shaft. By prop i mean the drive shaft from gearbox to diff.

Electrical / brake lights staying on.

sorted it out, if only every fault i have was as easily fixed. i removed the panel under the steering wheel and realised that the switch was to far from the pedal to make contact when i lifted my foot from the pedal so i took out my socket set and joined the two extention bars and rested one end on the frame of the switch and at the other end with my trusty hammer give it one small tap and that was it, problem solved now on to the gearbox, suspension, steering rack, paint work etc etc.

Engine + Driveline / which gearbox?

ok so a quarter way through a 1000 mile trip to a car rally in Killarney County Kerry in the south of Ireland my gearbox give up the ghost on me, i've owned the 90 e30 318is for 3 years now and it has always had a noisy gearbox espically in 5th gear but i always put this down to the diff which is a lsd from a 325is (fitted by a previous owner so not sure and the tag is missing) which was not great but locked up fine and a short shift lever which had no rubber bush between it and the connecting rod (causing vibration through the gear stick). i believe the lsd put extra strain on the gearbox causing it to fail. there is a loud knocking sound and there is oil being forced out the output shaft so there is obviously a bearing gone inside the box. what i want to know is what gearbox should i be looking for as a good replacement or even upgrade, for example will any 4 cylinder e30 or e36 bmw gearbox fit and if so what would the best ratio box be to start looking for.
many thanks
Cathal

ok gearbox really givin bother now. Big leak from da output shaft and the gearbox is making even weirder noises, wot i need 2 kno is, 1. Is it a seal or bearing that would have gone. And 2. Does the gearbox have 2 be removed til fix it. 200 mile's from home so only have limit tools an contacts. Any help?

dave, you are a legend. the collar you are talking about, is that a small transparent piece of plastic on the end of the switch which is red where the peddle makes contact with the switch. does it simply pull out from the red part of the switch, maybe i cud only remove it as apposed to bending the frame?

only noticed the other day when reversing my car into a parking space that my brake lights are staying on, they turn off again if i lift the pedal with my toe, is there any adjustment on the pedal where i can tease it wawy from the switch a little bit?

ever since i bought my car its had quite a whine from the gearbox, clutch master cylinder an slave cylinder have been changed as well as a fluid change a year ago but stil the whine persists.
what i want to ask is has anyones gearbox completely failed to the point where no gears can be found and the car needs recovered. currently 158,000miles on the clock.
