Engine + Driveline / TRE Fuel Pump
« on: August 03, 2020, 03:05:03 PM »
Anyone have the TRE fuel pump for a long time? I've seen some older posts on it here, but want to see if it's worth going for that vs a factory replacement or if people have had long-term problems with it. I'm going to only be running a stock engine, so don't need insane flow or anything, but wanted to save some coin if I could from the stupidly expensive OEM option...

How-To's / Re: DIY M20 flywheel conversion
« on: February 17, 2017, 07:59:55 AM »
Are any of you guys still around? I'm trying to gather parts for this conversion and maybe do a write up in the process so it doesn't have to be asked for again. I'm not positive if anyone came to a conclusion on the best/easiest parts, anyways let me know I'd love to do this.

I'd like to know as well, nothing has seemed conclusive. I'm planning on doing this soon, and my list is:

M20 Flywheel (Machined down, but that might not be needed with the spacer)
M20 Clutch
M20 Pressure Plate
M20 Starter
M20 TOB (M42 is the same P/N?)
M42 Drilled Out Spacer, between the crank and the flywheel
M20 Flywheel Bolts

Can anyone confirm that this is it?

WTB/WTT / NC WTB: E36 M42 Motor/Long Block
« on: February 14, 2017, 07:47:30 AM »
I'm looking to slowly start a stroker build, and would like to use a 92-95 M42 motor base for the updated timing case. Ideally something around North Carolina would be great. Thanks!

Any one have the stock electric fan from an E36 318 or Z3? PN: 64508372039

Finally did this today. Single bolt in the pan, 3 of the remaining were finger tight... This is on a M42 that just turned 106k. Loctite + 11nm adds a feeling of comfort. Don't wait checking on this.

General Topics / Replacing Driver's Side Door Window
« on: May 01, 2010, 10:08:19 AM »
I've been having a little trouble replacing the driver's side door window in my '91 318is. I've got the correct glass -- the old glass exploded, so it was easy enough to remove the old window -- but I cannot figure out the trick to get the window guides on the regulator's rollers.

The Bentley procedure looks to be for an early model (I don't have bolts for the glass on the regulator's arm). It looks like the two rollers sit inside the guides attached to the window. My problem is that I can get either roller on, but not both -- I'm not sure of the trick or if I'm missing a step that would make this easier.

Have any of you had experience with changing the window? How'd you get the new one in? Some of the posts I've found suggested unbolting the motor, but that doesn't sound like it would work unless I had the whole unit out of the car. I could be wrong though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SOLVED: If you are interested, unbolt the right arm (the bolts are on the LEFT side). You can then guide the window so that the rear roller goes in the rear guide. Then roll the window up about 1/2 the way and fiddle with the arm until you can get it in. It really only takes about 5 minutes.

Where are you located? I'm interested in the passenger side rain gutter trim (specifically the front piece, but the other pieces would be okay). I think shipping on them might be a bit hairy.

Engine management / Idle Issues
« on: December 27, 2007, 04:40:55 PM »
The check light is throwing a 1271 Ignition Coil #1. The plugs are somewhat new, but I've never replaced the wires. Perhaps that could be the culprit?

I'm not quite sure.

Engine management / Idle Issues
« on: December 27, 2007, 02:15:15 PM »
I've got a '91 318is that's been giving me interesting idle problems.

When I start the car after it has been sitting for a while, the idle is very rough sometimes causing the car to stall. It usually does this for a minute or so, and after the engine has warmed a bit, the idle is fine. Though, if I let the car idle for a minute or so, the Check Engine light will come on, but nothing idle-wise is wrong.

I replaced all the vacuum lines a few years ago, and they all look fine. I had the ICV out today, cleaned it up a bit, and that seemed to help only a small amount.

What else should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance!

I have to do 93. MarkD won't allow anything less.

Car looks amazing man. I've been thinking of a few styling things I've wanted to change on mine, and I think I'm going to have to get some Roundels for the Ronals. That's a seriously nice look.

Engine + Driveline / inlet valves / solid lifters etc

I'm pretty certain you'll get valve float after 7.2k. It happens in the M50s with the hydraulic lifters.

My paint is not impressive at all in person. She needs a good amount of cosmetic work before I'd be totally happy with it, but I manage.
