"Finally after no oil getting to the head the m42 is sounding right! "

Was it an oil pump? something clogged or broken?

some guy was doing a first start on a buildup and wasnt getting oil to the top end, it sounded very much like a diesel.

Was this on this site? What ended up being the issue?

Make sure your spark plugs are seated well.

I will check that... curious how that would cause the issue...

Take a long screwdriver and hold use it like a stethoscope on your timing chain cover. Is it coming from there?

Will check soon

When I start it and let it idle the car sounds like a diesel.

what I know:
It has oil,
No idea if the chain tensioner has ever been replaced

Any one have an idea?

I will be replacing the valve cover gasket soon as oil is leaking from that area...

Engine + Driveline / Did we ever figure out the "Hot Start Problem"
« on: July 22, 2009, 12:13:01 AM »
This was awesome!

Mine was not a hot start issue. My car would nearly die out after starting it and trying to just take off without letting the car idle for a couple of minutes.

How about rebuilding your engine into a 2.1L with 12:1 compression and 88mm diesel crank. Install some aggressive cams and rev all the way to 9000 RPM with solid lifters and bigger valves etc. I am sure you will easily hit 200-250HP or more.

Got some real info on this???

It ended up being the hose at the back side of the head. It was busted at the top.

+1; take out the "serious"...

True... I should have said something like... "efficient mods for minimal gain" :D

For what its worth, the power steering has been removed and will be acquiring an electric fan... I am well on my way to a screaming machine! :o

I really wanted to know what I can do to make this car a little more fun before the 24v transplant... not sure I would spend that money to do some of those things, unless I could piece that stuff together at a salvage yard.

So, I have been scouring the forums here to find out what little juice I can squeeze from the m42...

Without having to cross reference about 15 threads with multiple pages, what have been your top 5 power gaining mods???  NO TURBO, NO SC!  :D

I know the selection is limited, but I really don't care... just want to see what others have done/recommend...

I have a coolant leak coming from somewhere...

Here is what it is doing... Leaking from above, at the backside of the engine bay. Coolant is rolling down the passenger side of the transmission and dripping from the point where it meets up with the engine, making tracing the starting point difficult.

I have tried to feel around the coolant hoses at the intake area, but have not found anything...

Any ideas?

What makes this even weirder is it does not always leak... it is random and when it does leak, the puddle size is usually no bigger than a silver dollar.

I am new to the m42, so I do not the characterisitcs.

Car sat for a long time until I bought it.  I finally got it running and adjusted the idle to around 750 RPM.  The problem is when taking off from idle, the cars has trouble going.  The throttle response at idle is horrible and requires that I give a lot of gas to get the car moving.  It has the characterisitics that it wants to die and has a couple of times.  It is not throwing codes...

Any ideas?
Does the ECU have a natural programming time and if so, how long?

Items I have replaced:

All vacuum and water hoses
fuel pump
fuel filter
ecu
upper and lower intake gaskets
crank sensor
belts

Mine is reading at 543 installed in the car.  I ordered a new one due to a no start issue.  OP: are you having starting issues as well?
