hm... sounds like a good start thanks. How could I tell if it's completely blown?

Yeah sounds good. And to those double check that your aux fan is working correctly.  turned out to be the temp sender.  I'm really happy that I don't have to worry about it this problem anymore!

To repeat myself, this is a shot in the dark, but is there a cheaper solution to paying ~$175 for a new ICV--an alternate solution?

Perhaps I just have to face the facts...

Thanks for the explanation.  i ordered the 14mm ID, 17mm OD vacuum hose which was connected from the intake manifold to the ICV to the intake boot.  It was definitely collapsing under the pressure. I switched it out to heater hose for now until I find something more appropriate.  But again, I appreciate the explanation Wayne, it's really good to get some legitimate information on these things.  I'm learning little by little and this helps for sure.

Good I don't need to do anymore work then.  I couldn't find and water line at my job anyway. I've finished replacing my coolant and vacuum hoses, I'm loving that I don't have to worry about it anymore.

Damn I might be able to find 1/2 a meter or so of Water line at my job.  I'm going to definitely check that out tomorrow.

Alright.  I have some leftover 5/8" heater hose that I will use until I have some "spare" cash to get some quality silicon hose. Thanks for your info.

Hm... I think I understand. I also bought the hose from pelican parts when relocating the ICV Jorgeconrico.  I started my car up today and checked out the hose--it was definitely collapsing in on itself.  I don't like the likes of it.  I can't find sturdy vacuum hose large enough locally.  Would coolant hose work well enough.  I don't really want to spend that much money on 1/2 meter of tubing.  I just want something that works correctly.
Where did you guys get your hoses?

I ordered a meter of vacuum hose from pelican parts and it seemed awfully flimsy.  Perhaps I don't understand things correctly but I heard that vacuum hoses were supposed to be super stiff so they don't collapse... or something like that.  I was wondering if anyone could clear this up.

Also, what's the deal with Samco's products? Is there any upside to using "performance silicon hoses" aside from, I assume, reliability?

Thanks!

M42 Reference / Torque Spec for Intake Manifold and TB

I see. The exact opposite of what I thought. Duly Noted.

OK seems reasonable.  And a follow-up question:  Do you need to replace the gasket every time you remove the Intake manifold.  I believe you always need to replace the TB gasket because it's metal but does that also apply to the manifold's?

Hello, I couldn't find the numbers I'm looking for on  the internet.  Does anyone know the torque specs for the both the upper and lower intake manifold as well as the TB.

Thanks.

M42 Reference / m42?

The intake manifolds look quite different.  Like 3seriesnut said, you should have the M42 in the '94.  The M44 appeared about 6 months into 1995.

I appreciate the response.  It's frustrating being at school when I'm dying to get back and get my hands dirty (as well as take a break from school in general).

After I refresh my coolant components and figure out my steering fluid leak, I plan to go out for my first summer of autocross.

318isfolife, do you participate in the autocross events? I believe they're just outside DC.
I moved to MD just a bit ago so I don't really know it very well. How far away is MOCO from HOCO?

Hello,

I've been an avid reader/member of this forum for a few years now as well as e30tech, and r3vlimited.  I've also done my fair share of reading articles online concerning as many topics regarding the function and performance of the m42 and engines in general.  I'm currently a full-time student with zero background in any sort of automotive work (none of my family members or friends could care less about my mild obsession with my car).  I'm not saying I'm incompetent.  I'm a quick learner and have can accomplish most jobs on the m42. I'm interested in keeping her fairly stock, though I am interested in some of the more (to me, that is) complicated concepts required to properly modify the performance of the car.  I'm talking about things like "stroking", advancing the time of the camshafts (forgive me if that phrase is completely nonsensical), increasing compression ratio.  I want to know everything there is to know about this engine and it's potential. I want to know the pros and cons of some of these more complicated engine components in order to get exactly what I want.

Yeah, so what? Why are you rambling on like this?

I'm curious as to where you smart guys learn all your stuff.  I realize that a number of you work for shops or in related fields, so obviously that is incredibly beneficial to understanding these concepts.   Some of you have family/friends who are knowledgeable about this stuff and that's a really great thing as well.

However, I don't have that opportunity (at least at this point).

Moral of the Story: To any of you smart guys, where or what would be the best source for learning this stuff.  I feel like forums are really great tools but I find myself finding contradicting information on different forums or even people completely opposed to some concept in the same thread.  I want information that I can rely on.  Information that is standard, that will not confuse or mislead me.

I hesitate to participate in threads sometimes just in order to not pollute it with misinformation.

Perhaps, I'm asking for something that doesn't really exist the way I want or expect it would.  Maybe it's just a "figure it out, you're kind of on your own" thing.  But maybe it's not.

Thanks in advance if you made it to the end of this long-winded and perhaps strange question.

Best of Luck,
Eric
