How-To's / DIY: Floor Jack Rebuild
« on: June 17, 2014, 11:11:19 PM »
I rebuilt my Craftsman 9 50239 2-ton floor jack. I had to buy a 50mm socket and a 27mm wrench, but it was otherwise a straightforward affair. I can't imagine other floor jacks being much different. I wrote a DIY with pictures here: http://redeyegarage.com/blogs/news/8789897-red-eye-garage-tip-5-repairing-a-floor-jack.

Interior / Re: Billiard ball shift knob for E30's

The fit is tight enough that there isn't any discernible play in it. There are no set screws that hold it to the shaft. I've had bad experiences with set screws for shift knobs, because the vibration would always back the set screws out no matter how firmly I torqued them. The knob just pops on and off like the factory knob does.

I made a custom billiard ball shift knob for our project E30. It looks and feels awesome. It there is enough interest, I'll make a small batch of these. You can catch all the details here:

Interior / DIY: Custom race seat mounts
« on: October 12, 2013, 06:33:12 PM »
It is a little known fact that the diminutive BMW E30 318iS can be configured to have seating for 7. I was driving away from a Craigslist purchase with two racing seats riding along in the back seat. They were Itailian OMP "Record" seats that were expired per FIA regulation and were no longer of any use to the owner. They had a couple of tears in a few places, but were in otherwise great condition. The seller included the accompanying mounting brackets to sweeten the deal. The seats bounced around the back of the car as I drove back home. With the windows open and the 16 valve 4 cylinder at full song, I couldn't help but be in a good mood. Our project car was going to take one step closer to being a track car.

I just joined the Facebook group and got to chatting with a few of you, but I thought I'd introduce myself on the forum too. I've owned a '91 318iS for several years now. Mods include shocks, springs, sways, racing seat, upgraded brake components and deletion of all non-essentials. Rustoleum paint job and cage are the next mods. I plan to track this car. It will be a daily driver/track car if there is such a thing. It gets good gas mileage on the commute. You can see my E30 318iS DIY articles and other BMW stuff at www.RedEyeGarage.com under the blog tab.
