Rear Camber/Toe Adjustment Kit - E30, Z3, 318ti

it'll come up.  it took me a bit of time to setup and weld, but the overall final product offers a ton of rear adjustment.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Turbo M42 Race Car, Version 2.0

I noticed you tried running the whole grill covered up.  Did you run into an overheating issue?  I tried it in qualifying at Road Atlanta this O'fest and it ran a little hot in traffic and at low speeds. So, I kept just the headlights covered like what you have.

Your body work looks great especially where the fenders meet the side skirts.  Nice job.

I've toyed with the idea of going e-mod to try and set records.  Use a combo or a m50 b25 and a euro m50 b20 to get me right at the top of the displacement range.  Maybe an s52 head also.  Just ideas though.  The guys that run d-mod around are FAAAAST and I don't know if I'm ready to try and compete at there level just yet.  I still have the rookie X on the back so a little time under my belt isn't a bad idea before I move up.

It's been some time and I wanted to post a couple vids of the car in some action.

It's now a bmwcca club racer and has competed at Watkins Glen and at Road Atlanta.

First in class both races.  Well...  It's the only one in it's class.  They actually didn't know what to do with it at one of the races.  Everyone was like, "Whats an f- mod?"

I laughed and said.

Slow.

very slow!

haha

Seriously, it does really well considering it has over 60 hp LESS than the closest competitor and over 200-300 less then the fast guys.

Here is the vids from my last driving school in canada.

Cheers.

Here's a couple from tonight's progress.

There is a lot of open space now.  I could probably stand between the radiator and engine when done.  But..there will probably be a large duct there.  :D

As you can see Cylinder 4 sits basically where the heater box was inside the firewall.

Nice.

Looks like you're beating me on my future plans!  Should move some weight back a little!  I'm not even sure I can move the motor back anymore.  I might be getting into a new scca class next year.  If I do the class I have to make my pinned aluminum skin doors hinge!  That should be a fun project!  It sucks I cut off my hinges on the body too...:(

Let us know what the car weighs on the scales and and what the front/ rear % is.

Suspension / 5x120 swap
« on: March 17, 2009, 12:26:21 PM »
The 5 lug swap to e36 is pretty simple.  I've got e36 lower control arms, e36 325 knuckles and struts and e30 m3 off set lillipops.  I am also running an e30 caster camber plate.  I feel it is needed to get the caster adjustment where it would be needed.  My front wheels were pushed to the rear of the fender opening about an inch or so.  I'm fighting with trying to dial more caster in and centering the wheels in the opening.  I'm looking into a more offset adjustable bushing.  The e36 swap will keep the track width about the same as an e30 setup.
As far as brakes, I went with e36 325 calipers up front and e30 m3 rear calipers.  e28 m5 master and e21 booster.  There was a little shortening to be done to the shaft in the master, but other wise it bolted right in.  I also removed the proportioning valve inline that went to the rear brakes to get it equal.

e30 m3 front and rear would just bolt right into any e30, but they are expensive and a little hard to find.

I am looking for the 97 control arms to see if they will put the wheel where I need it and give me the caster I want.  I will post what I find when I get it done.  I'm prepping for an event at Mid ohio in two weeks, so I have my work cut out for me.

how do you get an oil pressure reading from the M42? Where can i buy a plug or something else, or do I need to make it myself, drilling holes etc?

The easiest way is to get the uuc oil filter cover thingy.  It has provisions for the oil pressure and oil temp senders.  I used the factory cover and drilled and tapped a hole in it.  It isn't deep enough to fit the temp sender, but the pressure is fine.  I haven't had any problems yet with mine.  Them it's just a simple wire to the gauge.

I'm trying to figure out how hard it will be to install a second tachometer. Our Sparco wheel and Corbeau seat makes it hard to see the top part of the original tach and speedo. Since it's a trackcar we don't really need a very visually accessible speedo, but the tach is important. I'm thinking about a Autometer to mount on top of the dash with a small shift light. Can I find the necessary wires behind the cluster to hook in to? Or do I run wires all over? Not too happy about custom wiring you see.. :)

I got fairly lucky with my install.  The harness had already been cut and made for this type of setup.  Four wires to make it run.  What you need to do is find a wiring diagram that shown which wire is the tach signal.  Mine was black if that helps...  Look for the right pin in the harness and just run it to the aftermarket tach. It is simple I just don't know the right wire off the top of my head.  Make sure you get a fairly descent tach and not one of those cheap narrow ones on ebay.

the girlfriend in the photo is looking lonely.

Here's my triple VDO gauge install in the console.  Not optimal placement for track duty, but fine my DD.

HAHA!  She's not lonely, she's got a beer!  Maybe she's not my girlfriend?  Could be my sister??  Or my grandmother??

Actually she's neither, she's dating a guy I work with. :D:D

I like the location of the gauges.  It's different.
