Exterior / Help! Antenna SUCKS! Need a new one :(
« on: October 29, 2008, 08:52:45 PM »
So my car didn't have the factory power antenna when I bought it.  Someone had pulled it out and replaced it with a $5 wal mart special.  It's since fallen through the hole and I'm antenna-less.  Car is so nice that I can't stand the hole letting in rain, etc.

What's my best bet for a nice non-power antenna for this thing?

THanks!!!

Engine management / Rough/No idle after jump start,, 1262 code..

So do you have a known good ICV left over then?  My idle is kinda of erratic but it's not bad enough to buy a new ICV from the dealer yet.  If I could find one for a decent price that was known good I'd like to have it for testing.

Thanks!

Engine + Driveline / Shipping a Tranny
« on: September 29, 2008, 08:12:28 PM »
The last time I shipped a tranny I just stuck him in a box with his high heels and make-up and dropped him off at UPS.  Oh and tape his mouth so he doesn't make any noise.  Highly recommended.

It's super simple.  I replaced mine recently for around $35 and that was at a stealership.  There is a connection that screws through the hole in the throttle body arm which you can actually screw in or out to remove or add slack.  It's just a simple process of screwing in the plastic plug into the nut on the other side.  You actually unscrew it to pull the cable back tight and you can actually unscrew it enough that it slightly opens the throttle without any pedal pressure, so just find your happy place :)

Replacing the cable is super easy, so if yours is cracked or problematic just stick a new one on it.

Thanks... is there a link to his site anywhere?

Very interesting!  So do you guys think it would be a good idea?  I would have to expect that these sharp toothed gears mean there is extra play in the chain from wear.  If this + the tensioner would buy me some miles before needing a chain replacement then I'll about it.

Another quick question since you guys were so gracious to answer quickly... can the 4 bolts on the cam gear be accessed with the valve cover off or does the crank need to be turned to position them for removal?

Now I need to go to REALOEM and see what I'm gonna need parts-wise...

Sorry if this is a ridiculous question... I had the valve cover off the ole M42 the other day and noticed the cam gears are very sharply pointed.  More than I expected for a 130k engine (and I'm the second owner of the car.)  I've replaced the lower oil pan seal, checked the upper pan bolts and everything is perfect.  I have never seen any hints of metal or chain guide issues.  I've also replaced the chain tensioner.

I had a wild ass dream that perhaps the chain tensioner could be pulled and maybe these cam gears could be replaced without a major overhaul.

I guess go ahead and tell me I'm nuts.  :)

Thanks!
Adam

Not gonna do a lot of 'tensioning' without a spring :)

Sorry I don't have my car here.  I bought another valve cover and intake manifold that I'll either powder coat or BBQ spray paint and sand...

My question is on REAL OEM http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AF93&mospid=47305&btnr=11_0264&hg=11&fg=15 parts 7,8 and 9 along with the main primary gasket will be replaced.  I don't know how many sets of 7, 8 and 9 I need to do it.  Can someone help a brother out?

Thanks!

Engine management / throttle body water plates, necessary?
« on: August 20, 2008, 06:27:45 PM »
Yes I noticed .025hp gain.  I can really feel how much cooler the air is going in ;)

People make a big deal out of it, but if you feel the intake manifold after running hard for a 20 minutes or more it gets HOT.  I have to imagine the air is heated more going through the (engine) heated intake runners than the little throttle body plate anyways.

My car is definitely making more power than when I bought it (133k on the clock now, bought it at 130k) but that's due to a combo of better NGK plugs and new wires, a Mark D 93 octane chip and a full exhaust from the headers back.  I've also replaced all of the vacuum lines (after removing the throttle body heater plates), and fixed some things like a sticky throttle cable with a new one and a new TPS / ICV.   All easy stuff and all of which have made the car run much better.  It feels like a nice smooth running BMW now :)

Engine management / rattling sound coming from engine
« on: August 19, 2008, 08:55:08 AM »
I did my tensioner the other day.  It took maybe 5 minutes from up top.  I didn't decrompress first but my chain does not make any noises.  I would say you'd want to do the pre-decompression routine on the tensioner before you put it in, just be careful that it doesn't pop out into pieces.  There's threads on it...
