Engine + Driveline / Diesel Sound
« on: December 20, 2010, 11:14:21 PM »
Hey guys,

I've searched but I feel like my problem is not as serious as replacing the whole TC group of parts.

Please help:

Car has had a diesel sound (0.5 sec in length) at start up the last year but it did not seem to be a big deal. Now it's a fifty-fifty. As in:
    X. Starts with the diesel sound and goes away after a second  and keeps working properly.
    Y. Starts with the diesel sound but does not go away until it warms up completely (as in at least 15min). And still, I can hear the sound slightly.

3 years ago I dropped my oil pan and also checked the head. Everything seemed fine, except one bolt was loose. The timing gears looked perfect and not sharp at all.

I've ordered Slide Rail (the most upper one) but I feel like its not a critical part to my situation and that I may need a tensioner + other?

Which parts should I order before going in and opening her up?

Thank you in advance!

Hey hey guys.

Thanks for all the help. (I know this is an old thread..but) I just wanted to update on how I fixed it in case someone comes upon this thread.

Basically I used some Mystery Oil in the gas tank and it went away in 2 minutes.

I am guessing the lifter was getting stuck and Mystery Oil is supposed to lube the head in some way? Well, it worked.

Thanks again for all the replies.

SO, my car (m42) has been sitting for over 6months. I finally started it up and I don't think this is a healthy sound.

I am not sure what it can be. I have ideas but I am no expert. SO, I NEED YOUR HELP!!

the high pitch is the clutch bearing/release bearing while the loud BANGING sound is ?????
the banging sound is actully louder and "thud" like in person...

here is a vid: http://s898.photobucket.com/albums/ac183/vlad_318is/?action=view¤t=e30weirdsound.mp4

Why don't you try it and report back?

Seriously, it varies.  You're going to severely score (sp?) various finely machined metal surfaces, spin bearings, throw a con rod through the block, maybe even seize up the motor entirely.  If the motor in question is installed in an aircraft, by all means run the hell out of it for as long as it takes to get somewhere and land the aircraft safely.  If it's in a car, have it towed.

Haha, sure.

Thanks for the info.

were you cruising around without oil?

haha, you're assuming I am a retard?

I was planning on buying a 318i vert. The lady hit the bottom pan and drove it  about 30 more min. Then the light came on and she said she stopped and had it towed. She said that she thinks the engine seized but I was hoping it didn't and wanted to find out more about driving without oil and potential problems.

Bmwman91 had a crack and drive a while, but as soon as he shut the engine off, it drained out. Vacuum kept the oil in.

As for no oil... I have heard of people driving quite a ways with no oil in various cars. Sometimes 45 minutes plus. The engine was trashed at that point though.

A few seconds with no oil, especially if it just had oil in it is not a problem really. After that, hard to say. On our motors there are two fears of no oil. First is the obvious bearing problem, our motor bearings are not held in place well and could spin easily, though I have not heard of it happening with any frequency. The only reason I know is from having seen the locks compared to other engines. The other problem we have is the chain tensioner. Oil helps control the chain, if it is flapping around because you need a new tensioner or the chain s worn, low oil could trigger a failure here.

Telling you how long to expect the motor to last without damage though is next to impossible. Once that light comes on, you should shut off the engine as soon as possible.

Thanks. That was VERY informative.

there is some video on youtube of someone destroying an old M10 by draining the oil. i believe before swapping in an M42. it lasts about 45 seconds at high rpms

That made me sad for some reason. :(

General Topics / Answers needed...

Hey guys. For the last 3 days I have been searching for the threads that have answers for my questions and I just can't find them. I know they are out there.

Cluster Problems
1. My temp gauge doesn't work. When I start the car, it jumps all the way to the red and drops back down to cold and stays there. While my car warms up the Oil Pressure Gauge starts becoming brighter and brighter, then it stays on. Now I know that (most likely) I have to do something with the cluster. I took it apart and couldn't see what needs fixing. I think i just don't know what to look for. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

1a. While my cluster will be apart, how can i fix the Rev gauge. It works about 50% of the time, the other time it just gets stuck between 2500 and 3500 and moves slowly in that range.

Oil Pan Problems
2. I finally changed the oil and oil filter.Took the valve cover off to inspect the timing chain and to just see how it all looks. I also bought an oil pan gasket because I wanted to drop it and tighten the bolts if needed be. Well, I couldn't. I took all the bolts off. Then i tried to take it off and I couldn't. I even used a razor blade to try to cut through the gasket to somehow open something up, stick something in there and to just try to pry it off. No go. I just had to give up. What can I do next oil change? I really want to drop the pan to make sure there are no bolts just relaxing at the bottom of the pan and not doing their job. BTW...the sprocket teeth were perfect (not sharp). Chain looked tight and everything was super duper clean. No bits and pieces of metal anywhere. :D

Stock Speaker Upgrade?
3. I got the premium speakers from 325is and wondering if they will work properly without the amp? I plugged them in and they sounded pretty good but I just want to see if any of you guys know anything about that upgrade.

Leather Seat Dye
4. I found this baby and I want it in my car in the proper color. What do you guys think of leather dyes?

All answers are greatly appreciated! :D

OH, today my e30 got a compliment from a young guy in a Chevy Impala on 22-24 inch chrome rims. "Hey, is that your BMW?"..."Yeah"..."Those are nice little cars"..."Thanks"...I was a little surprised.

hey, I have a question. Suppose you break the oil pan, all of the oil drains out put you keep on driving. How long can the engine hold out? What damage will be done?

Thanks!

General Topics / Just love my e30 m42!!
« on: January 12, 2008, 05:15:00 PM »
Recently went to San Francisco from Sac to pick up my friends new car ('01 Lexus IS 300). I was a little worried to go on my car at first because I am late on some of the maintenance. Well, I noticed that it drives much better after the trip. Before the trip, the idle was rough at times but now, after the high speed (90-100mph) freeway trip, it drives like heaven.

I always new that frequent stop and go trips are not good for the engine but I really felt it on my car this time. After the freeway trip it feels like the engine took in a deep breath and now is living, not just surviving.

So yeah, I love my e30 m42 on freeways as much as the twisties! :D

Hey some of those shots ain't half bad.  In number 4, you have the roof of the gas station growing out of your car.  Try to avoid having anything behind your car such as trees, lightpoles, etc. etc.

I just checked out your camera...it's pretty sick.  That is pretty much the closest you can get to a DSLR without actually having a DSLR.  Can you change exposure settings on that camera?

Thanks for the critique.

I had limited angles to shoot from as I didn't have a tripod.

I believe you can change the exposure.

My favorite is by far the one with the beetle. Now all your car needs is a bit of a drop ;).

Indeed.
