Off-topic discussion / Nut fell into motor. (PICS!!!)

the fact that it was barely turning at all when it locked up bodes well, for the bottom end, I think.   I'd give it a chance to live again.

Definitely!!!

It took me this long to take a look at it, imagine how long it'll take me to get it back in a car!

Come back for thread updates in say.... 1 year.

actually,  altho it looks ugly,  none of that damage looks like an engine killer.  I would tend to think that, after being reassembled, it would be a good back-up motor.   With a new head gasket,  and assuming it passes a compression test,  it will be fine.   Altho,  you may need to stay far away from the guy who dropped em in there..
                                                         Geoff

Thats what I was saying.

I agree, run it regardless.  I might give that dinged valve an overnight leakage test first...but your nut-stamper is quite the testament to BMW's metallurgy, isn't it?:D

Seriously... I like me my M42 more year after year.

Recon you were very lucky it didn't catch the corner of the valves and mash up them up.

Yes, my thoughts exactly.

con rods possibly are bent, so better check them...

Sure hope not, but I have high hopes for the better.

He did say the motor seized up, so it would (will?) be interesting to find out the extent of damage.

I'm guessing how many revs it was turning when it seized,
"may have some bearing on it"

                           i'll be here all week
                                  try the veal

                                                Geoff

LOL, Well I should have mentioned the car was driven back n forth for about 3 days, and felt fine before the incident. But, THE GOOD NEWS about it seizing up is that it happened upon starting the car/the car not starting one day. On this day I drove a couple miles to my parents, parked the car for a few minutes than when I was about to take off, I started the car but it barely turned over and then would not start. after pushing it into the driveway I later noticed the motor was seized. Fast forward, motor was replaced and sat in garage til this month.
