Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / M42 in 70s 2002
« on: January 13, 2009, 01:33:59 PM »
There's a BMW specialist a few miles up the road from me who were involved in dropping in M42 into a 2002 a while ago. IIRC the 2 litre M10 in the tii was pushing out similar power to an M42 at around 130bhp-135bhp.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Possible to install Turbo for RHD 318is?

I'd imagine it's possible, most other BMW motors in E30s have been turbo in RHD cars. I've never seen one though, seems everyone over here's opting for superchargers.

Pretty sure Appletree is running on Megasquirt and it isn't charged cooled in any way.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / 2.0l M42

I'm planning on building a 2L M44 using an M47 crank at some point, it might end up getting turboed (would seem silly not to, seeing as it'll be on megasquirt anyway). I'll then drop it into my touring, should be nice and different with shed loads of torque :D. It's a long way off, and I might change my mind (again) and finally give into the 6 pots, or another 4 pot turbo (something Swedish ;))

Watching this keenly now, I think my timing setup is in dire need of a refresh, so I may as well do this if it's worthwhile!

The camshaft in the M40 is easy as pie to swap, you can do it without removing the head! Lots of bits and it gets a little fiddly some times but more time consuming than difficult. If you can find an M42 however, it's a very simple conversion, I did mine in a few days, and it was the first real thing I'd ever done to a car bar oil changes and spark plugs :D

And yeah, UK here.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Considerations for running boost
« on: October 16, 2008, 02:12:59 PM »
Hey Matt have you concidered LPG? Much more resistant to detontation than even superunleaded. With this in mind you many only need to get a thicker headgasket in order to decompress just enough for it to see 300bhp. However, it's a lot of number crunching needed in order to get the flow rates right, and you'd have to get it on LPG only. I was thinking of doing a similar thing with a turbo once I've sorted the niggles on the touring, better off boost throttle response too, but you wouldn't need to worry about that ;)

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / 7 psi reliably on stock internals?
« on: October 16, 2008, 02:03:51 PM »
A few guys over here are running eaton superchargers pushing in about 8psi on stock internals, 205bhp and 180ftlb sounds nice to me :D

Also, you say your car is a German spec 318i? That means it's got a single cam M40 engine. About 20bhp less than an M42. Worn cam shafts and noisy hydraulic lifters are a common problem with these engines.

Sorry. Fuel economy, quiet cabin and ease of use are far more important to me than revving the nuts off this engine. The 3.64 differential was a vast improvement in every respect including real world acceleration. The car should have had this differential from the factory.

Fair enough, I can still get 35mpg mixed driving in my car, it's not massively noisy (4000rpm @ 80mph). I enjoy fast driving on twisty roads so the shorter diff seems to suit my needs, plus that and I'm hauling the extra weight of a touring. A lot of people here in the uk who use their iS's as their daily haul have taller diffs for the exact reasons you mentioned, but a lot of them have other cars as weekend toys, mine has to do both as I'm a poor apprentice, so for me the 4.27 is a good compromise.

Try getting to 60 without shifting to 3rd gear.

Remap the ECU to rev to 7200rpm and it's easy, lighten the flywheel and learn to change gear faster and you're away! M42's don't have a lot of torque so the lower final drive of the diff is a godsend.

Where do you live?

If you can get the car running on just LPG then you can run higher boost on stock internals, keeping the CR standard and therefore having better off boost throttle response, as LPG is less susceptible to premature detonation.

well you could look into maybe getting a turbo of a volvo and intercooler too.. alot of people take the intercooler off those cars and use them because there alot bigger then there stock ones and alot cheaper ... turbo you could get from alot of places but you might have to rebuild one or fab up the header to take it... but with bigger cam, porting the heads and bigger valves, upgrade chip, high flow cat, bigger throutle body, and shave the heads down to up the compression you could get around there.. without a turbo i would think...

Unfortunately I don't think a Volvo turbo will flow well enough for you to be able to run enough boost to get to 400bhp.
