Engine + Driveline / Input shaft torque specs for differential
« on: September 10, 2009, 11:29:34 AM »
I appreciate it, but That... Doesn't really help. I didn't replace the bearing or crush sleeve, I'm simply putting the input flange back on. It is marked with yellow paint, maybe If I just snug it down and try to match that yellow paint it'll be fine. Anyone have any other ideas?

Engine + Driveline / Input shaft torque specs for differential
« on: September 10, 2009, 01:08:34 AM »
I recently bought a 325is (big) diff for my 91 318is. I replaced all the seals, cleaned it, and will be painting it with por-15 before it goes in the car. My question is, what is the torque value for the input shaft nut? I don't want to damage the input bearing, or torque it past the crush value. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Engine + Driveline / 1991 318is oil pressure / temperature install
« on: November 12, 2008, 09:33:49 AM »
Hi all. I searched the forum and couldn't find anything related to what I want to do. I have some nice gauges that I would like to install in my car, specifically oil pressure and oil temperature. How would I go about doing this? Where do you normally tap the M42 for oil pressure, specifically? Could I just drill and tap the oil pan for oil temperature? What about wiring? Do I just splice the power feed(s) to an ignition switched line? As far as install goes, I'm aware that an e30 m3 pillar mount setup can be modified for this purpose, so I'm all set on that end. Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

General Topics / M42 Starter Solenoid not engaging (Help!!)
« on: August 11, 2008, 02:34:09 PM »
I accidentally started the car (91 318is) in gear, no clutch. First time ever doing that with this car. (get too used to clutch safetys on my other cars) It started fine after that once. Than it started to act up. I can hear the starter spin, but it does not engage with the flywheel and start the motor. If I have someone tap on the solenoid rapidly, it will sometimes start. My battery is not that great, could this POSSIBLY have anything to do with it? I'm not looking forward to paying 100+ dollars for a new starter. So, what do I do? I have a couple of E21 320i starters, but no E30. Are the starters and solenoids the same? Could I slap the solenoid from an E21 onto my starter? Can I possibly rebuild my solenoid? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Looks great!  Nice work!  Where did you buy the elbows?  Or did you just use ones you had?  I've not found a lot of hose parts at AutoZone, Pep Boys or O'Reilly yet.  They have hose, but not a lot of fittings.  I'd love to just find some 1/2" to 1/2" connectors (for the same reason as you - to prevent collapsing) and a few elbows like that.  Did the 1/2" fit snuggly?  I know some of the other members have used 3/8" but it's apparently a very, very tight fit.

I found awesome solid brass 1/2" to 1/2" connectors at home depot. The brass will last forever and look a  hell of a lot better than plastic. I'm doing this mod this week, hopefully it will go smoothly.

General Topics / The mess under the intake

Alright, so let me see if I have this straight. The basic ideas are to connect the ICV directly to the throttle body, and connect the crankcase vent directly to the intake elbow, eliminating everything else, including the throttle body heater plate? My intake is apart right now to replace a heater hose, and I would love to do this. What do I need in terms of non standard supplies? Just 1/2" and 5/8" heater hose?

Hey, thanks for the prompt replies you guys. I appreciate it. I'm going to take a look at that repair manual, and start taking the intake manifold off. The car is off the road anyway, since the driveshaft center bearing needs to be replaced, I need to install the big diff limited slip I bought, the ebrake needs to be adjusted.. etc. I think I might even pick up a set of the TMS aluminum subframe bushings, since I'm not fond of the delrin ones that I installed previously. I also bought all the stuff I need to completely rebuild the lower control arms and swap to polymer in the front. So, I have my work cut out for me.

Hello all. This is my first post on m42club.com, and I wish it was a bit happier. Last fall, when I put my 91 318is away in my shop for the winter, I noticed it was leaking a bit of something. No big deal, I figured I would deal with it when I pulled it back out for the summer. So I pull it out, and as I'm getting ready to drive it home, it starts purging massive amounts of coolant from somewhere under the back of the intake. My first concern was the head or profile gaskets, but I find it hard to believe a headgasket leak would cause this kind of coolant loss. Also - since this was on the back of the head, I doubt it's the profile gasket. I suspect it to be one of the heater core hoses, but I'm unsure, and so I turn to the M42 experts here. Is this a common problem? Do I have to remove the intake manifold? If so, can someone provide me with relevant manual pages for removing the intake manifold? Now for Some background : I've never overheated the car, although it does run hot. It has about 155,000 on it, and the radiator was replaced before I purchased it. If anyone needs any pictures or anything, please let me know.
