Engine management / Lost compression
« on: December 24, 2008, 06:48:38 PM »
The cars been sitting for about 2 months due to a loss of compression on cyl#2. from 190-205psi on cylinders 1-3-4. Cylinder number 2 gets 60psi on a semi cool day this was back in october.

Before the compression loss I had put a new head on there with about 100k on it due to over torquing the timing chain tensioner bolt(torque wrench was broken come to find out from the owner of it) and had loud lifters so I ended up replacing the head with a clean one instead. Bought the cylinder head gasket set from bavauto and went to town on it. Did the proper torquing procedure following the bentley(thanks to fredK) and the car was fine for the next few months.

October came by and I had parked the car for about a week. Next day when I started it it just idled like crap and stalled out. So me thinking, Im like okay could be a vacuum leak, dirty ICV or just the colder weather. So I start it up again and just hold the RPM's up till operating temp. Once at operating temp I let the car sit at idle and its just idling as if it had some huge cams in it so next things first I ask around a few people and I go to town on doing the compression test and come back with the results above.

The car has been sitting for 2 months because I have been thinking on either an m50 swap or just rebuild the m42.

SO can you guys help me out on getting this issue resolved? There is no coolant mixing with the oil so the headgasket being faulty is at a 25% chance of it just having damage near that cylinder. The spark plug of that cylinder is oil up pretty good and is causing most of the misfire and I am thinking its the rings but the car is not smoking nor burning much oil.

Well you certainly have many options and getting everything from one place will keep all of your records nicely organized.

Boost is a very good idea...and in that case a fresh rebuild would do it along with the head gasket!

R3V is most certainly the 24V haven but without the info there, it would have been very difficult to build my car.

Yea. I am thinking about getting a ko3s or ko4 from a 1.8t vw/audi. Something small to play with since Im not looking to enormous boost nor power just something that can get out of its way. As for management I will go with megasquirt or see if I can get a chip burned somewhere.

As for the headgasket, Anyone know where about I can find a thicker HG? I was thinking double stacked stock HG but would rather just find one made for that choice.

Now if I was to go with a thicker headgasket...Since the head will sit slightly higher, Wouldn't that cause an issue with the timing cover profile gasket since it wont be seated flush with the block? Also by how much does the thicker hg lower the compression by?

Nice. I have actually got a few prices from RMeuropean.com but I will contact BMA as well to see if the price will be better so I can just order everything from one place.

As for the little more m42 power. I was thinking about doing a stock rebuild and maybe boost it with a thicker headgasket to lower the compression a bit.

I see a few guys on here running stock motors boosted 7-10psi with no issues. So I don't know yet on what exactly I want. I was going to go with an m50 but r3v=M50's as you should know lol.

So as I stated before in one of my post, I lost compression on one cylinder being number 2 and have tracked it to worn rings.

So now I have plans to just rebuild the m42 to stock specs just to have a healthy running motor.

I am trying to get some prices together on bottom end parts....Piston rings, Rod bearings, Main bearings, Seals and so on..

Now I have been searching and found a few good prices on most of the parts I need but I am lost on the main bearings... A few websites I have gone on have been talking about late style main bearings with 2.0mm tabs? and others saying "for the Base M42 1.8L Gas Engine".

Can you guys help me out on sourcing some of my parts? Help will be very appreciated.

All the help and information and "hook up" on parts will be great.

Well I found out where mine was coming from. Did a compression test and cylinder number 2 is very low compared to the rest.

Cyl#1-215 Cyl#2-102 Cyl#3-235 Cyl#4-235

Oh god this is funny....I caught it a few days ago.

Changed the fuel pump since it was loud as hell and bad anyway.

So whats the info on your build here? Any engine work done? What size turbo are you running? Software? Questions questions answers answers lol:D

Engine management / Fix one thing and something else goes

Im in the US. There is like a running water kind of noise coming from the pump underneath the back seat but not loud. Just the noise that is underneath the car near the wheel well is what makes a whining noise at all times.

Just got the oil pan gasket and things going thank god nothing ugly was chilling inside the pan but anyways.

Ive been noticing my injectors are pretty loud and so is the fuel pump? On the drivers side or is that the filter that is there? Well whatever, anyways thing is pretty loud so I'm figuring that this may be the cause of the loud injectors. Maybe it is clogged and its forcing the gas through the injectors making them ping loudly.

My questions are:
1- Is it the fuel pump or the fuel filter that sit on the drivers side near the wheel well area?
2- Would this cause loud injectors?

lifters. grow to enjoy it, or spend lots of money replacing them.

Is there like an alternative to not spending so much or maybe just to quiet them down a bit? Thicker oil maybe? Or some oil additive? I am running 10w30 right now castrol high mileage and Im really not feeling it. When I ran valvoline 10w40 the car was much more quiet. Hmm Time to go back to that I guess.

Where do I start?

Alright, Lately I have been noticing that everytime I am on the highway cruising after long trips and I get back to local roads I hear a loud tick coming from underneath the intake manifold sounding like the injectors. Engines runs fine and has all the power its got but just the noise is really loud and annoying. I don't really know how else to describe the noise but its pretty annoying. Its just after long trips on the highway though, through local roads I can drive it fine with no tick or any bad noise. I have plans to do the timing tensioner and pull the oil pan this week but the noise is not coming from the chain area nor the bottom end just underneath the intake manifold.

What could it be?

Engine + Driveline / Got some issues looking for help YAH TRICK YAH!!!
« on: March 08, 2008, 07:50:36 PM »
Its more of a grind noise. I already checked the alternator belt and all it was pretty lose since I had taken it off a while back to do my oil filter housing gasket  but that problem got fixed. But its only sometimes while im turning the car over that it grind and it sounds as if the starter itself is not catching on to turn the motor over. Maybe no enough spark to give enough energy to the starter or something similiar to that or just the starter itself. As for bleeding the system I will be doing that soon or might just change the clutch slave cylinder just to replace it and have it new.

Alrighty where do I start....

Sometimes when I start my car in the morning the starter makes a grinding noise and once I try it one more time the engine turns over fine and the problem doesn't come back for the whole day unless the car sits for a while. So could be the starter right??

Next issue is on rainy days the clutch pedal seems soft and spongy. So 1- Could be the clutch slave cylinder or 2- bleed the system and re fill it maybe some air in the lines. So maybe since its raining out and all the moist does some David Blaine magic and does work:confused:

So some help will be appreciated thanks.
