Engine + Driveline / Electric Fan Thoughts...
« on: January 23, 2009, 10:21:45 AM »
Low current in electronics usually means low power or low rpm etc etc If its on all the time it will just take really long to properly warm up and then when its warm it wont keep it cool enough (especially if you live in a warm climate)

First up if your gonna run it constant run it off a relay not off direct ignition because they usually draw up to 20a. Ive got mine running off a thermatic switch which is excellent. Been running for about a year without an issue and ive never had it overheat on me.

for a low current draw i suggest a single 16" fan. They do the job fine.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / e36 turbo manifold in an e30
« on: January 09, 2009, 10:32:00 AM »
Theres a fair bit more room in the e36 and ive compared e36 m42 turbo manifold with e30 m42 turbo manifold and they definately are very different. the e30 m42 turbo manifold you cant really have 2 pipes going side by side if you know what i mean. it has to be one on top of the other or underneath.
I spoke to the chap that builds them and he specialises in m42/m44 turbo cars and he said it definately wouldnt fit. He had a m44 turbo for sale from an e36 compact but the manifolds would not fit my e30.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / REAL Cold Air Intake
« on: January 09, 2009, 10:26:03 AM »
Ive got a similar airbox but a custom fibreglass one shaped as a big velocity stack and what i also did which helped was tilt the radiator about 20 degrees (with custom mounts) and have a 3" pipe going direct into it and it picks up air from where the kidneys are. With this setup and the shape of it all it keeps air speed up as high as possible.

Definately an increase over K&N in the stock box. Most ppl will tell you otherwise but its worth the effort.

Are you running any swaybars and if so are they adjustable? Stiffening the rear sway bar up will make it more oversteery but in your case probably just stop the understeer. Front negative camber would also help aswell as offset m3 caster bushes

Engine + Driveline / e36 318is gearbox into e30.

Hi folks

Just wondering if anyone can clarify that the e36 m42/m44 gearbox (getrag 240) will fit into e30.
Its coming out of a 1997 e30 318is so i itll be a 1.9 m44 and hoping to use the gearbox in my e30 318is.

Thanks heaps!

Must be a common m42 thing. most of mine were stripped aswell. at least 8-10 so i did the same thing bit the bullet, bought a helicoil kit and then helicoiled all of the threads every single one. but at least now i can trust it

Hi Christian
There was another e30 318is who lives around here that was for sale but its not mine. I saw an ebay add for it and the photos were taken in the same spot. Tom uglys bridge between blakehurst and sylvania if you know sutherland shire area at all. Im only ever there for photos. He was asking silly money for it though? something like 10k?

318kid - Thanks e30 in general are fairly common i usually see at least one every day lol but 318is's are tricky to come by but they are still around :) maybe because these cars just never die! only the dashboards crack :P On that not though i was in another state last week and saw next to no e30's there.

Ah you guys are putting too much weight into the little cars :P

All i did for mine was a new pioneer headunit with aux in for the ipod and new 5 1/4 speakers all round (soundstream) - I bought that whilst having a 4x100wrms amp, 4x50wrms amp, Peerless HDS 7", Peerless Tweeters, Electronic crossover, 2x hertz 12" and a clarion monoblock all in the shed from the prev car. I refuse to put any of that in as its all too heavy and will need fibreglass to make it fit. Considered just putting the peerless up front running active with the 4x100 but 7" speakers in an e30 is a tight squeeze and im not chopping my door trims up lol.

From old car

and these were the amps controlling the speakers. (also had DD 6.5 Splits in the shelf - subs and sub amp out of pic) planned to compete in SQ competition never quite made it though.

Engine + Driveline / 4-1 Exhaust Headers for M42 on Ebay
« on: May 15, 2008, 09:54:47 PM »
Ive seen these also. the design is near identical to stock except a 4-1 collector rather than 4-2-1. Even spoke to the engineer about it (good mate) and he reckons its a waste of time. All it will do is move your powerband up and make it a pig down low. If the primarys are larger also it will exxagerate that effect.
If building a fairly modded m42 (180ish hp) id consider it but otherwise it will probably do more harm than good. Power increase on a fairly stock engine? id say 5hp but youd want to be revving it to 7200rpm at least to get that 5hp out of it.

Another thing to consider since its from the states is will it fit a RHD car since the yanks dont have a steering column down there it might not fit our cars.

My 2c.

Short shifter
E36 m3 clutch and custom flywheel (ebay) 16lb

Engine + Driveline / Flywheel Chatter?

So, i have a noisy motor at idle, especially before the car reaches proper operating temp.

I hear rattling similar to what I had when I installed a lightweight flywheel and M5 clutch on my e36 M3.

it only really rattles when the car is at idle with my foot off the clutch. the sound is eliminated when i press the clutch in.

what part do i need to replace? or can i get away with it now until i get rid of this damn glasspack custom jive exhaust that is held by one hanger...

thanks.

I have exactly the same noise as you with my ebay lightweight flywheel/e36 m3 clutch combo and its been like that from the start. The throw out bearing was replaced though so i dunno its a bit embaressing waiting at the lights but i live with it.

That coupled with noisy timing chain people think my car is just gonna fall apart on the spot.
