if your going through all the trouble of working in the new radiator, why not eliminate the fan clutch to?

Didn't have everything I needed to install an electric fan yet and it wasn't a priority.  The radiator definitely needed to be changed.

Is it a factory mount from the E30 325? E36? Is the Mishimoto the M3 version? The E30 325 version? The E36 325 version?

1. The driver's side lower radiator bracket is too long and will not allow the e36 radiator to drop in. The solution is getting the corresponding bracket from a LATER e30 325 from the junkyard.

Getting ready to do this once I source a radiator, as my third M42 radiator is now leaking…I'm done with the plastic integrated expansion tanks!

I picked up the M20 mount and expansion tank, however I have a question: how are you guys mounting the expansion tank? On the M20 car I pulled it from, there is a bracket welded to the wheel well and another "nub" that a plastic mount screws onto, however, my car has neither of these, as there was never anything intended to be in that spot.

Also, probably a stupid question, but where does the smaller of the two hoses running off the cap of the expansion tank go? I can tell that one goes to the radiator, but there is a smaller one that was disconnected on all the cars I saw at the junk yard, and I'm not sure where this one will be going.

The smaller hose just vents the overflow to the ground.

I found a random screw roughly the same size as the one on the m20 cars and screwed it in from the fender well.  Then just mounted the plastic mount onto that.  As for the metal bracket- did not use it.  The snap plastic bracket seemed to hold it snug enough.  Good luck!

Engine + Driveline / COP conversion and dynolicious. HP numbers!

I'd be interested to see a before/after test using your old wires vs. a brand new set of wires. I kind of like the fact that my coils are mounted away from the vibration and direct heat of the engine.

Until I get the rest of the results off my friend's Ipod, here's the best run.

COP CONVERSION

Acceleration

0-10 MPH:   1.08 sec
0-20 MPH:   2.75 sec
0-30 MPH:   4.54 sec
0-40 MPH:   6.91 sec
0-50 MPH:   9.67 sec
0-60 MPH:   13.33 sec

Elapsed Time

60':   3.10 sec   @   21.1 MPH
330':   8.32 sec   @   43.6 MPH
1/8 mi:   12.59 sec   @   57.9 MPH
1000':   16.36 sec   @   62.4 MPH
1/4 mi:   20.01 sec   @   58.7 MPH

Miscellaneous

Max Speed:   62.5 MPH
Max Acceleration:   0.47 G's
Peak Horsepower:   87 HP

That is a great article in a great magazine.  I love how they get their hands dirty, they really know what they're talking about.

I'll have to check the dynolicious software out.  76hp sounds a little low, even for net...even for my car!

That's a good point.  I knew going in that I wasn't going to get an accurate whp number.  Dynolicious will calculate that number from the accelerometer inputs and how accurate you know your vehicle weight and drivetrain loss %.

What I was looking for, however, was a consistent way of measuring acceleration.  That way, when an engine modification is made, I can pull a useful comparison that should help confirm any gains made.  In my case, I got  67whp consistently before the COP conversion and 76whp consistently after the COP conversion.

My car still had original wires on them.  I know this because cosmoline flakes were all over them.

I had never attempted to gather raw data from any mods I had done over the years. This time around I was inspired to try with the COP conversion because of a Grassroots Motorsports magazine article where they showed an 8HP increase just by replacing the spark plug wires.  Granted, they were just getting HP they should have already had, I still wanted to see what would happen if I tried to gather data.

I used an Ipod touch with dynolicious software.  4 runs with the tired old stock wires and 4 runs with the COP conversion.*

Averaging out the runs, I found a 9HP** increase!  66.7 to 76.  WOOHA!

So if you haven't done it by now, go do that COP conversion!

Great thread I will be doing this very soon.

Anyone in California having issues with SMOG after doing all this?

I'm in california.  Two visits to a test only station and no issues with smog.

Your driveshaft might need a rebuild.  Is there red rust around the U-joints?

Engine + Driveline / Found Coolant in Oil!!!!!!

A blown head gasket will not necessarily mean water will get into the oil..It could be blown between the water jacket and a cylinder. As the engine runs, it sucks water (antifreeze) into the cylinder..It can also blow compressed exhaust gases back through the cooling system..
See if you notice any white smoke when the car is running.
Sometimes you can remove the radiator cap (only when COLD) and see if you notice any large bubbles in the antifreeze when you rev the engine...Might have to fill the reservoir tank up near the top.

Compression or leakdown test!
