- complete valvetrain service, ie: chain, tensioner, guides, maybe sprockets etc, consider also replacing valve seals (depends on their condition)
- replace vacuum hoses, they are old and might leak - it can cause issues with idle running for instance
- leaking gaskets - possibly oil pan gasket?
- of course all filters and regular service stuff

Of course complete rebuild including piston rings, bearings, block machining etc. is a cool thing but it's expensive and takes time.
I wouldn't touch head gasket either unless its broken.

As far as I know you should use 1/3 of valve spring mass. At least that's what I found in books.

GREAT! THANKS!

Do you know the weight of inner and outer valve spring alone?

Was the hydro filled with oil when you were wheighing it?

Maybe you are right and he fabricated a bellhousing himself.

Strypt, it seems that once again you are right and I am wrong :o
Really sorry for the mess.

It's confusing, since I am sure that in Poland there is at least one rally e30 318is using E30 M3 gearbox. At least that's what the owner claims, but I don't have any contact with him.

Moreover when you look in the FIA homologation form for e30 318is you find that the dog-leg e30 m3 gearbox is an option, so it seems there is some possiblity to make it work.

OK, so I did some research and here is what I came up with:

318is has Getrag 240 with integrated bellhousing.
M3 has Getrag 265 Sport with separeted bellhousing.

In order to connect the M42 with M3-gearbox, you can swap the bellhousing from an e28 Getrag 265.

That's interesting, since I know about people using 318is with M3 gearbox. I'll try to find out something...

Eu-spec E30 M3 had dog-leg gearbox, us-spec had H-pattern.
The ratios are as follows:
European-spec: 3.72 (1), 2.40 (2), 1.77 (3), 1.26 (4), 1.00 (5)
North American-spec: 3.83 (1), 2.20 (2), 1.40 (3), 1.00 (4), 0.81 (5)

Together with the 318is gearbox they all belong to the Getrag 265 "family".
I believe they are all interchangable. In the FIA homologation form for e30 318is, the eu-spec M3-gearbox is also mentioned as an option.

what about the suspension? wheels? fiberglass parts?

Suspension depends on the setup.
Mine is fitted with Bilstein B8 shocks and H&R springs at it's going to stay so for some time. I think at the moment the red one has Bilstein B6 and springs from e30 325 for gravel rallies. For tarmac he also uses H&R springs and different shocks I suppose.
We use various wheels depending on the occasion, mostly stock bmw/bbs 14'' and 15''. No fibreglass parts planned so far. I'm not even sure if the technical requirements allow that.
