Engine + Driveline / Timing chain slap/rattle BAMBOOZLED
« on: May 08, 2017, 01:42:47 PM »
Have an m42 that I built for a turbo 2002.  EVERYTHING inside the engine is new other than cams, lifters, crank, and rods.  I recently started having an issue where when the engine is cold the timing chain slaps and the rail hits the inside of the timing chain case.  Ran the car with the valve cover off and could see the rail moving.  Once the oil pressure comes up the sound goes away after about 15 seconds.

I replaced the timing chain tensioner with a different one...came from other car with zero noise.  I had actually swapped the tensioner that was in this car to the other car and no noise there either but...

I had squeezed all the oil out of the tensioner multiple times and thought the sound was gone but...nope.

I have built a couple of these engines and swap A LOT of them into 2002s.

I am somewhat at a loss as to what is going on now....
I am now wondering if there is something wrong with the oil control valve in the oil filter housing or a check valve somewhere.
If anyone has any ideas PLEASE post.  I am trying to get this car done for Vintage in NC which is quickly approaching.

WTB/WTT / wtb: complete m42 or m44
« on: October 07, 2015, 06:17:26 AM »
Looking for a good running m42 or m44.  Really all I need is the long block but would buy an entire engine/trans/etc if needed.  PM or email me what you have jake@classicdaily.net

Looking to buy ASAP.  Closer to Michigan the better but shipping is fine too.

thanks, Jake

I sell mounts to swap the m42 into a 2002 and also have a complete bolt on turbo kit for the m42 in both an e30 and 2002.  Send me an email.  jake@classicdaily.net

thanks, Jake

Engine + Driveline / Re: Dyno Data (my dyno)
« on: June 03, 2015, 05:44:39 AM »
THis is one of my m42 turbo kits in a 1975 2002.

Did some pulls today...boost was a little higher than it should be so numbers are a little higher.  BUT things are looking very good.

Boost is a little high on this one so it is a little leaner than I would like.  Need to adjust the preload on the wastegate and/or richen the tune up a bit.

I don't post here a ton but really should because I love the M42 and do a ton with them.

Anyway... I run a shop in Michigan and just got my dyno up and running.  Been doing some pulls with my m42 swapped 2002 and getting some data out now.

I think these numbers are pretty close but the software can be adjusted way up or down.
I wanted to post and see what the rest of the m42 guys think.

I added new electronics and data recording from performance trends.  They have a eddy brake controller too that is VERY new so still dialing that in.  But it does work.  Which is cool.

Finally getting some good data out of the machine and all I can say is it's really cool.

Some pictures...

My m42 powered 2002 on it.

and some DATA
This is two graphs of the same car when the engine was just warming up and then fully warmed up.

Stock chip vs a "tuned" chip

stock report

tuned chip report

and just the tuned chip graph

I am still learning how everything works and all the info I can get from it.

I am readying AFR from the tailpipe on this car and I think it is a bit leaner showing that what is reading happening.

I always forget I have this thread here too....  Either way kits are in production.  Two more about ready to go out.  Here are some pictures...

Intercooler brackets pre powder coat. (one extra here...)

Manifolds all tacked together

Box full of hardware...silicone couplers, injectors, bpv, etc etc

Aluminum IC pipes in progress

Loosely put together on an engine on a stand..

By pass valve

Oil return fitting...this fitting has an O-ring and nut for the inside.  Kit will come with the drill bit to drill a hold in the pan.  This would be a good time to drop the lower pan and make sure there are no loose bolts holding the upper pan on...commong m42 issue.

The manifold is just about all welded up.

I built a manifold almost exactly like this for my buddies e21...
Here is a picture of it.

The manifold on the e21 is not using Ts like the one I made above but the routing of the runners is the same.  The e21 is running the same turbo as well.  It spools VERY fast and holds 8-9psi all the way to the rev limiter.

I would have preferred to build a 4-1 manifold but one aspect of this kit is to keep AC and not have to dent in the fender well for turbo clearance.  There was no room to fit a 4-1 collector as two of the runners would be going directly into the frame rail.

Another reason to use this manifold is the tune is based around a setup with this same manifold.

More work done on the manifold.  Entire thing is tacked today.  Needs to be sandblasted...and fully welded.

sorta out of focus but just to show how tight everything is tucked in.

Some progress on the manifold.  Trying to make it so it is VERY tight to the engine to allow for AC room and also easy to reproduce.

routing for cylinder 2

routing for cylinder 4

I am still not 100% sure on how 1 and 3 will look....
Either cut this T and place in here

Or put the T here...

Runner 3 will then loop up and over #2

I will fully make runner 2...tacked all up.  Then work on #1.
I wasn't very sure how I was going to route everything but this setup should work well.
