General Topics / Re: Key wont turn
« on: December 01, 2013, 09:40:07 AM »
I'm not going to be much help But I had a 1987 325e and the key wouldn't turn, just out of the blue. I took the ignition apart two or three times and couldn't see what was causing it. Finally I noticed a small pin that slid around and blocked it from turning. I glued the pin in place and had no more problems. The pin was in a slot along one side, could you post a pic looking down the throat of the switch? It's been about 7 years ago when it happened and can't remember exactly how it was arranged.

Make sure the car is nose up as high as you can get it, this seems to help a lot. Double check the stat, I've got a bad one more than once over the year's.

Edit
Make sure the car is nose up as high as you can get it while bleeding the system, this seems to help a lot. Ha-Ha that's better.

Per this forum... fuel pressure.

I had a bleed plug strip out, the threads were 10mm x 1.5 which is only about .006 different than a NPT 1/8-27 pipe thread. I tapped it out and put a brass stop-cock similar to part #4921K41 in the link. It's a back up radiator now and hasn't been used but everything is tight and strait. I put a head gasket on and replaced the radiator then. I hate those plastic threads, I elevated the front of the car with the heater on high when I refilled it, massaged the top hose and didn't need to bleed the second one.

Maybe if you pop the covers off the idler and/or tensioner pully's then spray water on the bearing, see if any change. Small screw driver and they come right off.

Thanks colin, I found this site last night        http://euler9.tripod.com/bolt-database/22.html      I'm use to slash marks and "grade markings"

I got the housing back together and changed the o-ring on the oil dip stick and everything is nice and dry.

Thanks for the link, I found the oil filter housing but it calls for 8mm bolts and mine are 6mm. I'll use the specs on page 4 for 6 mm. In the table they list
   m6 thread                m6  8.8    9.9Nm
                                 m6  10.9   14.0Nm
                                 m6  12.9   16.9Nm
I'm not sure what the 8.8  -  10.9  -  12.9  stands for? I suspect strength of material, higher number more torque?

Page 37 is the page I'm looking at with the oil filter housing.

I'm changing the o-ring and paper gasket out and having trouble finding the torque specs for the 6 bolts. I did a search and found a lot of good threads on the subject but no specs on the bolts, anybody have those?

Those numbers came from the Bentley book but mine covers 1984 thru 1990 not the m42. I looked to see what my 95 m42 spec is and haven't found it yet.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. 3 terminal 40 ohms between two 20 ohms between the other two, 2 terminal- between 8 & 10 ohms.

Stick with it bmwman91 you almost got it, they don't make um like this anymore.

The circuit is funky for the cooling fan. Check the temp switch like was menitioned and if thats OK change out the Hi speed relay. It's the megenta [I'm color blind, kinda purparlish color] one that BMW used on many different models. Also check the yellow low speed relay. I went to Pull a Part and got a couple spares, they are about $45.00 otherwise.
