Or you can use a piece of sheet metal if you have that lying around.

Engine + Driveline / Timing cover and head not lining up?

Bmwman91: All 3 bolt holes on the top of timing cover where the valve cover bolts are stripped! :(
Helicoil vs. tapping out more thread for a slightly longer m6 bolt vs. tapping out a bigger bolt. What are your thoughts?

Engine + Driveline / Timing cover and head not lining up?

I got the head and timing cover to line up!

- Tried using BMWman91's method, but I couldn't torque the bolts after a certain point, the threads in the timing cover may be stripped (another problem). So I wasn't able to tighten it down far enough to move the timing cover.
- Then I went off of Bigred's suggestion of filing down the gasket ends using some sandpaper I had laying around. That got the cover to line up much better.
- Finally I used a screwdriver to gently push against the cams and tightened the timing cover on FTW!

Hey Dean,

Not sure what you mean by horizontal vs. perpendicular but the gap is present on both sides where the cover meets the head. So pressing down on it directly from above would solve the problem.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to loosen the bolts (but not remove them) on the upper timing cover and then use screwdrivers to pry the cover down as best as i can.

Thanks!

Is this a problem (See attached)?

Any ideas on what happened? The head is off an E36 318, and the rest of the engine is an '91 318is. Could that be it?

Engine + Driveline / White Smoke from Tail Pipe

My loud clicking noise was the timing chain flopping around. Not sure how that relates to the white smoke, but for what it's worth.

Engine + Driveline / About to do cylinder head swap...questions

Honestly, you can get a head for cheap, CL or ebay. The biggest thing however is you will want to pressure check the head no matter where you get it.

Here is an ad from CL in woodbridge, its not that far.

I grew up in Bethesda btw.

Also, if you have an E30 M42, a late model head is a good upgrade.

Hey NO717, what's the difference between the heads? I'm in the middle of swapping my cracked '91 head with a '94 head.

Also, know anything about the difference between the blocks?
And, which combinations is the oil check-valve needed? I don't think there was one in my engine (unless it fell out). And I didn't see one in the '94 (unless it fell out, lol).

Engine + Driveline / Oil Feed Check Valve?

Better to drag this up from the dead rather than start a new thread.

I have an m42 head off a 94 318i on a 91 318is block. Do you guys think I need the valve? Is the spot that needs to be drilled for it needed on the block or on the head?

I'm changing out mine too but lost track of where the locating dowels sit between the head and block. If you still have yours in the block or the head, can you send me a picture?

Does anyone know EXACTLY which holes the locating dowels sit on the block, between the block and the head? If anyone has a diagram or a photograph, that's would be superb.

From realoem.com it looks there should be 2 dowels.

Engine + Driveline / Are my pistons / valves bad?

The machine shop was about to seat two new intake valves when they noticed a small crack on the fire ring (?). The guy said the head was useless...

Aaaaaaggggghhhhhhh!!!!

Well, I'll now be looking for a new, used head.
