How to bump up?

How do you bump up your thread to the top of the page? In one of my paintball forums you simply said up. Is it the same or is it something else like bump?

as soon as a new post is on a thread it goes to the top. so say BUMP

Yeah, I wouldn't do that, all of the threads were hot threads, and just seemed to die. Just wanted to know for the sake of knowing...
