I know I can buy a chip but is there any way to just change the maps by plugging my laptop to my ECM? I have a spare stock ECM and I'm wondering what I could do with it to improve my car performances.

Yes and no. You just need a Eprom emulator. That means you just unplug your oem chip, connect emulator to eprom socket and connect emulator to your PC. Chip's data can now run by your PC and with suitable program you can change all the values (It is better to do this at the dyno) When you are satisfied with the results just burn .bin file to new eprom or eeprom. Then just remove eprom emulator from Motronic, install new chip and you're ready.
You cannot directly change the values to your oem chip while it is still in the Motronic because eproms are old technology which does not allow change the values inside the eprom. Might be easier with Eeproms, but also that would need a lot of mods to the oem hardware. It's possible with newer OBD II systems.
Check out this system designed for older Porsche Motronic's http://www.maxhpkit.com/

I contacted maxhpkit.com about the possiblity of applying their product for BMWs his reply was as follows:
Hello Michael,
I want to move into the BMW/Audi/VW/Volvo markets as I have the Porsche markets. All I need to get started is a stock chip to read, and someone to provide dyno or data logging info. As quick as I can plot the maps for any vehicle, you can use Maxtune with it, the graphical tuning tool. After dyno/data and user input, I can release a performance chip for that specific vehicle.
If you provide a chip and agree to be a beta tester, you get the final revision of the chip for free. I typically use more than one tester on each type of vehicle so if there is dyno time involved the tester doesn't have to bear the cost of more than one dyno session.
Let me know if you are interested in helping development.

Russell

I'm going to send him an oem chip for an E36 318i and 325i to get his development started.
