Just got back. Only one problem. The ignition switch would not unlock (turn clockwise) once. After some graphite and fiddling it finally turned and never happened again. Once home I pulled it apart and lubed the locking prong and all that I could with lock graphite. Has anyone had this problem? When it was jammed we tried everything with the wheel and switch we could think of. Just loved the drive. Even with no cruise it was great. Pictures if I can figure it out.

Great trip... and mileage. I averaged 33-35mpg per tank when I went from SA, TX to Miami, FL Put about 4000 miles on her total in 2 weeks. I have other family in FL and bounced around there. Car made it without a hickup... except for her usual initial start stumble that can't seem to get figured out...

Gotta love it! Has anyone else noticed the masses of WTB threads over on r3v looking for M42 cars. Irony at its finest.

Nice number, what was your average highway speed?

Funny thing is, I could probably sell my 318i today for more than I paid for it last year.

I traveled between 65 and 75 mph. Also ran 36psi front and rear. New air cleaner, O2 sensor, tires. Ran the ac about 50% of the time. Bought 91 octane or better gas. Waxed the hell out of the front surfaces mainly to make getting the bugs off easier.

Thats better than I average on mostly highway driving. I seem to be only getting about 26mpg. new o2 sensor and spark plugs also. I think my cat is disinigrating and my muffler is clogged as a result, COP could help a bit too. Any other maintenance youve done that you have noticed a difference in mileage?

When I replaced the profile gasket, I did a complete valve job. Also did a little port and polish job. Also advanced the intake cam about 2 degrees. New plugs, deleted the mess under the intake, Checked the tightened the oil pump. New oil and filter with 10w - 30. Changed all fluids to redline or the best I could get. Car has new front end (stock), drive shaft dampener, shocks/struts, front lip, Also replaced the gravel shield and belts, hoses, timing chain, gears, guides, etc., windshield and seals. New paint and all outside trim, badges, etc. Balanced each wheel dynamically. Tires are Hankook touring. Car had 107k on it.

Hehe. Last road trip I did in Romania was Iasi to Bacau, spent the night, then on to Bucuresti. The distances aren't very long but with the kind of roads and traffic you have over there, it takes forever. Romania needs more freeways.

Oh yeah, in a Daewoo!
