So I started this today and took pics along the way. As far as the parts # for the hoses your better off looking here http://bmwfans.info/original/E30/2-T/318is-M42/USA/L/M/1991/04/mg-11/ill-11_1272/
http://bmwfans.info/original/E30/2-T/318is-M42/USA/L/M/1991/04/mg-11/ill-11_1154/

Special tools?
I didn't have a 11 mm deep socket for the intake manifold

Other related parts?
throttle assembly gasket (2x)

Take off the throttle cable. You need to be careful since the rubber is hard and brittle.

Theres a C shaped bracket under the opening of the throttle assembly that needs to be unbolted to access the 4 nuts that attach the throttle assembly to the intake manifold
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is019-1.jpg
Undo the 4 nuts that hold the throttle body housing to the intake manifold. you need a 10 mm long socket.

Need to replace the 2 throttle body gaskets

Once you undo the coolant hoses on throttle warmer? Get ready for more coolant flow from the drain plug
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is025-2.jpg

Now remove the intake manifold. They are held in place by 11mm nuts! So you need a long 11mm socket. Also there is a bracket on each end of the intake manifold that holds it inplace. Sorry no pics
Also this bracket
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is003-5.jpg
After the intake manifold is out, you need to take out the lower portion of the manifold. there are 5 nuts. Here I already loosened it and moved it out of the way.

Nice pictorial writeup... what is that white/blue L connector you have on your vacuum line? That line goes to the booster???

I made the same mistake. Pulled the plastic coolant junction out and most of the plastic stayed inside my old coolant hoses. Great pics!!

This is sticky material

Thanks I'll keep updating when my parts arrive. Also, after this I'll think about tackling the timing chain with a writeup also.

^It's clearish plastic on mine... It's blue/white on a different m42 e30 I looked at the other day so I was wondering. I'm trying to look at everything possible to find the cause of my start idle problems.

My idle was a bit irratic when I was stopped at a traffic light. Most of my air hoses were cracked and loose fitting so I replaced them. I guess I'll find out if I fixed the problem once I get a chance to start the car.

Hooked up one end of that u pipe with the 50 hose fittings!
Sorry didn't take a pic of the middle attachment of the waterpipe. It goes to the radiator around the drain plug.

new lower intake gasket

Connected this hose from the edge of the engine block to the bottom pipe on the firewall

Already showed you where this hose comes from.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is011-7.jpg
Now mount your lower intake manifold.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is012-6.jpg
pull these two pipes out the opening.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is013-3.jpg
just showing where the hell this hose is coming from

this is what the mess of hoses should look like
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is017-3.jpg
got a new air hose under the intake boot.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is019-3.jpg
Mount your intake manifold and reattach this bracket
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is020-3.jpg
attach your ICV and attach the longer air hose to
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is021-3.jpg
the U shaped hose.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is022-3.jpg
connect ICV wire
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is024-3.jpg
tighten bracket
Mount your throttle assembly. Sorry no pics. Dont forget to reconnect the water hoses to the throttle warmer (?) or whatever that part is called.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is027-1.jpg
remember that C shaped bracket on the lower half of the throttle assembly? well its there to hold the lower half of the throttle warmer to the throttle assembly.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is029-1.jpg
then reconnect this bitch of a air hose.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/m42sport/318is031-1.jpg
Then the throttle cable. I might have missed a connection or two in the reassembly...refer to my dissassembly pics. BTW anyone know the part # for these two parts? Both were crusty and brittle and are falling apart. Thanks.

Nice write up but this is all incredibly pointless and expensive when you can bypass the mass of hoses with a single 9" piece of coolant hose. Mine just passed visual inspection part of smog check in California without any of this stuff. The tech said they don't care as long as nothing is leaking and all the emissions components are in place and functional.

Its a one way valve to maintain vacuum in the brake booster in case the engine shuts down.
Maybe this is a good time to clean out your throttle body.

good luck

If you're referring to the grommet where the cable passes through the bracket..

Grommet
Part number: 35 41 1 152 744

The clip where the cable attaches to the TB actuator arm (?), I'm still searching for.. I needed both pieces, myself ;)

It only cost me ~50 dollars for every single hose under there, and it looks very clean TO EACH HIS OWN

^I prefer it deleted as well, but lots of ppl keep them original. Which is cool too. I just didn't like the way the original stuff cracked and corroded out. The less points of failure the better in my book.

Yeah I sprayed it down with brake cleaner before reassembly.

wheres the bleeder screw located?

On the driver's side of the radiator... don't put too much torque on it, they break really easily.

Ok thanks.

I like to ring the guys neck who allowed this hose into production. As you can see the hose opening is clearly too small to fit on the radiator. I spent about 30min trying to muscle it in. Lets see how long this will hold!

Nice write-up and pics. I don't necessarily think this vacuum / cooling system is not good. I just like not working on it, and not looking at it. Make sure to tighten your hoses. ;)

Haha that's funny someone else noticed the hose connector problem! I ended up cutting the old hose (which was still in good shape, at least on that end), and splicing old and new together right under the airbox. That solved my connector problem, but it pissed me off that I had to do it.

I too like having things oem. That's how I did mine when I did it a year ago. Nice write-up! Brings back memories.

I just didn't like the way the original stuff cracked and corroded out. The less points of failure the better in my book.

I was thinking that maybe the vacuum hoses crack so often is that they are being heated beyond what they would normally be by the hot coolant running through the throttle heater hoses. The vacuum lines run right next to them in those 4-way hose junctions. I'm using oem replacement vacuum hoses, but deleting the TB heater mess, so I guess I'll find out depending on how soon they crack again.
