Do I have to swap the intake manifold from a '91 m42 to drop in a '93 m42 in my e30?
I'm taking the 242k mile engine out of my '91 318is and putting in a 127k mile '93 318i. I'm swapping the mounts, ps, a/c, ect..

1)Will the e36 engine harness plug into the e30 computer?
2)And do you have to swap the intake manifolds?

Those are my two questions. Thanks for any help.

You will have to use the e30 intake. e36 is too tall. I think you will have to use the e30 valve cover also. Due to the velt fitting located at the rear of the e36 valve cover. e30 is in front.
I just had to do this myself yesterday.
Besides, you get a little more torque out of the e30 intake, which is needed anyways.

Don't know about the wiring harness. Should just plug in... I guess??

IIRC the oil pans are different. Maybe the pick-up tube as well.
Time to put some loc-tite on the pick-up bolts and anything else internal.
The E36 may also have the serpentine belt. Which is good if you have all the accessories.

So are you saying that I need to swap the oil pan and pick-up also?
Thanks for all the help guys.

You will have to swap complete intake, maybe the throttle body (different position of the sensor, and different angle of vacuum feed line. There is a thread about this) oil pan, pick up, complete wiring harness.

About the serpentine belt, if you want to use it (assuming the E36 engine comes with it...b/c not all E36 had serpentine belt), you will have to bend the dipstick, as it will be in the way of the belt.
The valve cover is the same, it is different in the M44, but not on the early M42 E36.
I hope this helps!!

WRONG!
you only need to swap the oil pans.
ce tut.
intake will sit just fine under the hood in the E30, valve cover will do as well.
- check out my pictures (1990 M40 to 1996 M42 or Vladi's 1991 M40 ro 1994 M42 engines....)

Enjoy.
